asphalt sound deadening and engine temps

Post by fetasigma »

My entire engine compartment is sheet metal(i dont know if things ever had a asphault sheet to deaden sound any like the beetles did behind the fan shroud), if you were to minamally line the compatment with half an inch would it just make the engine compartment an oven to bake your engine into uslessness metal lump, or would it dampen the sound and have little effect on engine cooling. any ideas?

I think it would be fine to dampen the engine comp just as the beetle and other air-cooled VWs.The Thing was supposed to be a low dollar no nonsence practicle ahead of its time SUV.
If I were to do that I would also insulate the area under the rear seat and perhaps add carpet if you live in a dry area. The doors could also be packed with foam or a similar sound deadening material. Go for it. Good luck. Bob Ingman

thanks, i am going to do the floorpans after i treat them with por 15, i just repaired all of them, but i dont think i will do the doors since i love my waxed paint winking back at me :) , I have some heavy duty rubber that i cut to fit the floorpans that i really like since it gives it a rugged look. I just want to be able to hear my radio and myself think at over 50 mph since it is my daily driver. its getting a lot of comfort mods, but nothing that changes stock appearance all that much. thanks for the info. ps i will get temp data for everyone before and after the conversion.

Marine dealers such a West Marine sell engine compartment foam mats that deaden noise on boats. It is heat resistant, water proof and kills the noise. Plus it comes in sheets that you can cut to fit.

I covered the entire area behind the rear seat with carpet padding and then put a carpet over it. It really did help with the engine noise as my 1835 was loud. Of course it helps that I live in the desert so rain isn't an issue.

i tried lining the engine compartment with the foil backed tape at home depot with the asphault lining(gutter repair tape) recomended in the sound and interior forum here. it made a small diffrence. someone had already prior to my owning the car undercoated the car, underneath the fenders, and the engine compartment with bedliner of some sort too. Still a louder that i want it to be, but i am going to try adding second layer(hey you cant go wrong when its only 15 bucks) of the gutter repair tape. it does look pretty cool to have foil lined engine compartment though...lol
