Replacing front-to-rear fuel and brake lines

Post by jpashley »

I'm going to replace my Thing's complete brake and fuel lines- anybody got any advice for me on bending or fitting the solid front-to-rear lines? How difficult will it be replacing all the lines- special tools for connecting fittings etc.?

Also- where can I buy the front-to-rear FUEL line? Can I just order another front-to-rear brake line and use it as the fuel line?

Thanks, JPA

JP the parts you need should be available through either The Thing Shop or Things Unlimited.
Are you speaking of the fuel line in the tunnel as well. If not any auto parts store will have fuel line and any VW shop will have the cross body brake lines. The lengthwise section can probably be made up for you locally as well. Let us know how this develops. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Just got in touch with Mike Basso- he's got it all- the fuel line in the tunnel of my thing was replaced with a fuel line running through the cab- I'll probably replace it- not the one in the tunnel (that looks very difficult)- I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the advice. JPA

Howdy.

Bending the lines is fairly easy... the keys are not to bend too quick and do many smaller short pressures on the lines. With a little patience, you'll be fine.

Brake Lines for a bug are commodity car parts.... you'll be amazed at what a new set of lines and hoses will do to the stopping power of your car.

Thanks for the advice Mr. Airhead, I'm going to go for it with replacing the brake lines, master cylinder and wheel cylinders- while I've got the Thing all apart. I figure, I've gone this far- why not do it all? And compared to my diesel- these parts are pretty reasonable.
