Crock I just bought another T-4 2.0L 914 engine for my thing. The party I purchased from is installing a six. I can check with him to find what is similar and what is dissimilar.
Which transmission do you plan to use? What is the length of the engine?
Length will be critical. I have a flat four in there now and it is actually too long. Had to shoehorn it in there. Let us know.
Mechanically I think its a very simple swap using a comb of 914/bus parts but the length is going to be the limiting factor. Good luck Bob Ingman

I have been measuring it and it look like it will fit if i remove the apron panel and a bit off cutting it should just miss the bumper and if i lift the hood up a bit it shold fit in it. I was going to run the stock IRS box until i can get a 915 box. I now people will say it wont last but it was free with the thing. And it is for the streets not for racing.I will have to make sume supports for it so it dosent snap the thing in half.

Croc I think you will need a rear hanger( brace ) to keep the frame horns from twisting. Even a T-4 engine requires this. You probably have it on the engine now so it will be a matter of making brackets to the body to hang it,
If you look at the rear view of my Thing i think you can see the rear mounts.

Being that the 914 and 916 have the same transmission I have to assume that their flywheels are either the same or interchangable. If I am correct that means the bus flywheel will also fit. That being the case then you can have the T-1 input shaft bushing pressed into an 1800 bus flywheel and bolt everything right in. I have seen a Porsche six cylinder in a split window bus and the engine comparrtment is the same size as the Thing.
Any idea of the weight of this engine? You will need better rear suspension and better brakes as well. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Perfect. I know where a 911 five speedo is available for a great price. . It will bolt right up to your rig. . It is from my pal who does Porsche dismanteling in Georgia. The good news is we have a Thing club (RoMTOC) member who heads that way on business amd can bring stuff back to limit shipping. My buddy who runs the German Motor Works shop in town does racing Porsche and Buses. He has a super sleeper 68 bus he calls the Super bus that runs a 912 6 cyl Porsche with the 951 5 speed trans. It is a screamer. He get on the highway and hits 5th gear at 75. His bus is an oxidized red with rusty rims and a bent rear bumper. Greatful Dead curtains over the windows and when a Toureg comes up he put it in 4th and walks away. He has it dialed in primo and has over 80,000 miles on it with no troubles. But he is a Porsche/VW original German parts god. -mann

mann,
sorry to nit-pick, but no porsche 912 had a six-cylinder engine, they were all 4 cyl, either the 356 style upright or the later 912e had a pancake motor similar to a bus or 914.

Scott I think that was probably a typo on RWs part. I`m certain he knows the diffenence between a 911 and a 912 or 912E. Good luck. Bob Ingman

all 911s were 6 cylinders. all 912s were 4 cylinders. Early 912s had 356 engines, the one year only 912E had a 914 spec TIV engine.
The 914/6 had a very early 2.0 911 engine six installed, and used a 1969 911 flywheel to adapt to the 901/914 gearbox.
It is possible to use a 911 engine, with the early 1965-1969 flywheel into a VW with the stock gearbox, but you will need the later style throw out assembly.
In short, the 911 engine is huge, bulky and almost 100 pounds heavier than a TIV. Parts cost triple what VW parts cost, and you can build a 180BHP TIV for the cost to build the 911 engine stock.
I build early 911 engines as wellas TI and TIV and a few 356s. I start at 10K for a 911 engine, or I won't think about it.
