Please someone, I need a bottom windshield frame

Post by peterjager »

Does anyone have a bottom windshield frame for the Thing, mine is going into the paint shop the week of Dec 14th.

Mine is not repairable, rusted way to much.

Will put pics on the site as soon as it is painted.

All help is greatly appreciated, Peter

peter,

i had this same dilemma. the trouble is, no-one is going to sell a lower frame for less than what everyone charges, they are just too difficult to replace.

i repaired mine, which was way rusted. both ends were badly rusted away, but the hinges were salvageable. the upper was not great, but passable.

what i did was get a piece of lower w/s frame material from thingsunlimited.net. they sometimes cut the hinges off the frames, and then they have the middle piece left over. i did the opposite, cutting the hinges away from the middle of my bad frame and replacing the ends with pieces cut from the donor section. i had to plug weld the extra holes where i used a section of donor frame that had wiper pivot hole, and i had to be very careful to make sure the pieces were welded together straight and true. this was pretty fiddly work, as the ends of the w/s frame are cut and welded in a complicated way, but i did it in my garage with low-end tools and a decent mig welder. it did take a long time, about 30 hours or so, but i work really slowly...

best thing is that the cost was only 25.00 for the frame section - much cheaper than a replacement frame.
