Generator or Alternator?
I've always run the same generator in all my small displacement Type 1 engines. It never gave me a bit of trouble. I'm considering switching to an alternator with my 2270cc engine because I'll also be using the Compufire DIS-IX ignition system, a stereo that puts out about 45 watts per channel and a Eberspacher gas heater and quite possibly A/C. I didn't have any of these accessories before. If you think I need an alternator, what kind (output) should I get and where can I get one without having to buy the whole kit (stand, belt, pulley etc)?

Generator or Alternator?
I don't need the alternator stand. I'll be using the stand that came with my DTM Shroud.

Generator or Alternator?
I have been running alterators on mine for about the last 3 years. There are three basic models all put out the same amperage. My car is a 74 it had a separate alt and vote reg. I have had quite a bit of trouble till I finally found the problem. The second kind looks like the first but has a hugh square block of plastic on it where the red and white wire connects. The third kind has an internal volt reg. It came on the fuel injected models. It is the best.
Make sure all the wire connectors are clean, bright and secure. And the source of my problems, make sure your grounds are all clean, bright, and secure. There is a ground from the car to the transmission that was hanging in the breeze on mine.
With the halogen headlights on, the fog lights on, the wipers on, and the stereo on, my alternator lights starts to glow dimmly, which means I am drawing off the battery. The alternator is susposed to power everything and charge the battery. The battery is only to start the car. Anyway that is how I understand it.
The option I am going with is the 75 amp alt from Kimco it looks stock and every thing and comes with a wiring diagram to hook it up. Run larger guage wire to your fuse box and get a hard start kit to supply full current to your starter motor. This should alieve any problems with the mods you wish to do.
I have wondered if the 65amp guts of the T4 alt would adapt to the T1 alt.
Also I think the fan tin between the alt and fan may be differnt, but I'm not sure.
How are you doing with your exhaust setup? I got a really good book from Rob Bentley, but I am off on a different tangent at present.

Generator or Alternator?
I haven't even gotten to the exhaust yet. I'm still working on the mockup so I can have the valve train geometry set. I checked the deck height and decided to shave another .025" off the cylinder deck. This will increase the compression ratio from 8.1:1 to 8.5:1.
