wiper switch '74

list,

(have also posted this q on topica)

i am rebuilding the wiper switch for my 74. the original had the stalk
broken off, i got a replacement at a swap meet, took them both apart and replaced the stalk from the old with the swap one.

the switch seems to have 4 positions. is this correct? my owner's manual indicates it should have 3 positions, off, low and high, plus the
momentary position. my rebuilt switch has 3 definite clicks. bear in
mind that when i first took the car apart i had never driven it, or any
other VW thing for that matter, so i am not sure how it is "supposed" to
be. i will test the switch at some point soon.

thanks for any comments,

Scott what is the part number on the switch? It could be that you have one from a Rabbit. They are said to be interchangable with the type 1 VW unit. Not the same as but interchangable with to be more specific. Look again at Toms site this time under steering column upgrades.
Yes you are right . Three position off, low, high. and pull to wash.Best of luck. Bob Ingman

bob,

no part numbers that i can see. the original unit is swf and the replacement is not marked. they are the same part, but not identical, one appers to be an aftermarket. both switches have 4 positions. the wiring harness is the same as an original 3-position as far as i can tell.

i'll keep looking around for more info and test the switch in situ once i am able to.

Scott according to Facts figures and parts interchange the 73 thing and 74 thing have different steering columns with the 74 being same as Rabbit. If this is so then there is a probability that there are 2 switches as well.
I think Mike Basso will know if this is the case. www.thingparts.com

Yes this seems to be the case. I just checked Things Unlimited and there are seperate #s for the 73 and 74 wiper switches. Check the inside diameter. As I remember from buying aftermarket steering wheels there is only a 1mm difference between the two shafts . Good luck. Bob Ingman
