All,

For your latest update on the price of our cars... NADA list a 74 in "Low" condition at $3,600.00 and "High" of over $11,000.00 so we are getting some respect out there...

Make sure that your insurance agent has these numbers...

Here is the link to the page..

Breaking it down to the simplest form I know would be to say that it just depends on whats on thesamba.com at the time. I would bet 9 of 10 Things are now sold there. Best to you randy. Bob Ingman

Yes, true Bob it is just like everything else, what ever the market will bare.

I posted this not just for those that are looking to buy/sell, but for all of us that need to make sure the our insurance agents are up to date on the replacement cost of our beloved things. The insurance companies go by Book value first, then you can fight to get it higher from there. Good that this starts at a resonable level, so it is not a hugh jump to get to the true value.

Remember, anything that you add, above stock is added to the price, make sure you keep all your reciepts!

I work heavily with our local underwriter.

Stated value is the only way to go on insuring these things.

If you go traditional methods, they can find some rusty old parts car and call that an equivalent.

Stated value eliminates all of the guessing and quibbling over NADA.

This forum is so cool that before I can post the request the answer is given. I was heading towards a request for the links to the NADA page. Thanks RF.... From my point of view it is for information only. I own and drive my cars with legal liability only. I am a long odds player. I survived the Haymen fire summer before last and did not lose my home of 30 years (uninsured the entire time) and still carry no insurance of any kind.. I live in a place where you have only nature and God to fear and I completely trust both of those forces. And so it goes. King K-mann

I have full, stated value, collector car coverage on mine. It is far cheaper than any other insurance I could get and allows me to have more than one VW based car on the road.

Please tell me more about this insurance coverage. Include company, rates and contact information if you would not mind. I am interested in learning about what you are talking about. K-mann

I have collector car insurance, it is very restrictive, limited mileage per year, car must be in locked garage, car can not be driven for errands or commuting. Driving to shows, club meetings, autoparts store and pleasure driving only. My company does not cover dune buggys but they cover performance, modified and stock show quality cars. You declare the value on the application and they have to see photos of the car and engine.

You have to be careful on the application, I first applied at another company and said that I might run errands with the car. I was instantly rejected with no allowance to reapply. With American I asked for same liabilty as my regular cars: 100,000 / 300,000 / 100,000 and I asked for 5000 miles because it was offered on the website. They rejected me. When I called and complained I had to sign affidavits that $100,000 max liability was ok and that I would not drive more than 2500 miles. I may be able to increase the mileage when I renew. My declared value is $10,000. No one with less than 10 years driving experience can drive the car, no body with an accident can drive the car. On the insurance card my oldest daughter (19) is specifically denied from driving the car. You have to carry the same level of coverage as your other cars. You must own one car for each licensed driver at home and the collector car doesn't count. I have three other cars and three drivers. My thing is the fourth car.

My insurance is $85.00 per year for full coverage. It works for the way I use the car.

Mine is with American Collector Cars Insurance.

Insurance Companies

Tri-State (Continental Western)
Haggerty
Grundy

I'm a Tri-State freak because I can call up and talk directly with the underwriter as we're setting up new cars.

Note... With a Thing sometimes they're considered off-road.

It may take some work to get approved for collector's insurance... once you're there it's tons easier....

I wrote a page on the "Cost of Ownership" topic (including insurance)... on the page there's a link to Tri-State.
