I have bought two crewcab syncros from the army.
One of them runs really fine (1.9G) the other (2.1G) runs great BUT it has mixed the engine oil with the coolant!
The problem is that in the military base they DO NOT accept a tow to pass in!Start and go or leave is what they suggest.
The distance is about 10kms to exit the base so the Q is :

If I drain the old engine oil along with the oil filter and put new can I drive it safely for about 10kms????

I think You'll be O-K driving it that far...

They had probably driven it for way longer than that anyway.

Wow Jim, it seems like you have a never-ending supply of 181's and Synchro's....

Do these double cabs have the factory viscouse coupler dis-connect?

Can you take it out of full-time four wheel drive?

I am currently making ten "kits" for this application... I think it was standard, or an option on European Models.

Nice to hear from you Joe!

I will go to pick it up tomorrow the crew cabs.

As for the decoupler one of them have it.

Yes the front diff can be completely disengaged and also can be locked.

My Next Tranny conversion "kit" will be to convert those Locker Diff's to a 002 std Bus (front shift nose cone) for street / strip / Off-road.

Locker style" Posi" on the fly...

I have a friend here that has about 50 he's been stashing away...

I know little to nothing about syncro's.....'Locker style posi' is that like an ARB ?? ie locks when you want it to, not when the diff senses wheel slip?
I'm interested for an off road appl but I want to use fiddle (cutting) brakes that won't work with a normal lsd.

They are a 4 gear factory superdiff.... With a shifting fork, and a slider assembly that engages over the outside of the Diff...

This completely locks the carrier, and makes it into a "Spool"

You must be at a stop, or barely moving in 1st gear to engage it... It can be dis-connected on the fly... if you un-load (let off the power) the drivetrain.

These things are BEEFY, I have never seen one break.

I'm putting one in my Sandrail, and my Baja... you can use the Turning / Cutting Brakes in the normal mode. But not in the "Locked" position

On the Synchro, they are actuated with a vacume canister / solenoid / switch on the dash... I'll be using a Marine-Style cable system, and some custom linkage with a lever next to my shifter...

Good deal Joe.I installed a factory locking diff into an earlier tail shift 091.It turned out awesome.I too have never seen one break,but I've seen many w/ the fingers of the slider cracked pretty bad.Real nice way to have an open diff or spool on command.
