What do you guys use for sway bar bushings for 181's. I know the Thing sway bar is thicker then a bug so can you modify the bushings for the bug to be used on a Thing?

Lots of choices here but my favorite solution is to buy Sway-a-way urethane bushings and stainless steel clamp kit and use them. I do not like the stock VW sway bar bushings or clamps. You are correct the Thing 181 front sway bar is thicker than a bug sway bar.

If you intend to off-road much I would advise removing the antiaway bar. That will create an independent front suspension. Better keeping all four wheels on the ground as much as possible.
But as K-mann says the SAW bushings are the best when using the bar. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

we use and sell the standard kit for a bug, $13
never had any complaints,
the urethane may squeak.

I have that kit, the urethane bushings and the clamps that I will let go of cheap. I was going to lower my thing but came to my senses.
As Bob has stated, I have removed mine and do not need these brand new bushings.
I bought them at CIP1 and they were $19.95 plus shipping. make me an offer...
