New pressure plate problem....

1974 412 manual transmission is the vehicle.
I got up this am determined to get my engine in my 412..the one i finished 4 months ago that has been sitting on my garage floor. Well, I attach my test bell housing and starter to test oil pressure, and awesome..60 lbs cold. So i take off the bell housing, and get ready to install my new clutch/ pressure plate............it seems like the pressure plate is too deep........the clutch disk matched the old exactly only slightly thicker. But when i rest the pressure plate on the flywheel, it seems that it is at least 1/8 of an inch away from the flywheel.................is this right? there are no pins or anything on this flywheel that the pressure place sits on, so it is strictly a bolt in kind of deal................
The sachs number on the new pressure plate is 3082 026 331. That is on the sachs box.........

I figure that is the case.but awaiting Ray or one of these people that have the correct PN's at their fingertips...........I could have the motor in this week if I could get the right p/n......

Hey, these are the numbers off the sachs boxes I used?
Sachs-1861 441 234,VW 211-141-031C Disc. There is a"G" hand written? But could be a "C" with a curle at the end,sorry.
Sachs-3082 026 331,VW 022-141-025G pressure plate.

That last part there.where were those numbers from? And when you installed did the pressure plate sit kind a far from the bolt holes (1/8")? That is where i stand...............and that second sachs number is exactly what i have.........

Hey I got the number off the boxes of the parts I installed In my 74(more like a 73) 412 2door with a 1700(EA) d-jet. I got the parts from Street & Sand Toy Inc.
www.sstvw.com 954-491-8085. I havent been able to drive it yet so I cant tell you if it is right but it seemed to assemble right? When it did run for a while it didnt make any noise but not driving it I couldnt tell you if its right I'm just hoping! Maybe Ray can tell you more!
Are you talking about before you tighten the plate or after? Is the plate sitting in the groove of the flywheel? Bill

That is normal. The gap between the edge of the pressure plate and the flywheel should be about 1/16- 3/32". This is also why its important to torque evenly from side to side Remember.....it has no spring pressure on it until you tighten it down. When you do, you will notice that the diaphram itself....the fingers....flatten out. The point is...that when you put this on a press...and put a ring shaped piece of steel or a throwout bearing on the fingers and then comprsss them...the disc shouldbreak free after about 20mm of compression. The 412 correct pressure plate and disc had a couple hundered more lbs of compression than the bus. Ray

The deed is done.............installed clutch and pressure plate last night, and it did torque down.................considerably more pressure than a stock bus or beetle..........I guess that is what made me think something was not right. I had never installed such a heavy combination before.
It is better to ask then to pull the motor agian!!
