CV Part # compadible with 411 or 412 ?

Post by alsehendo »

Bob do you know the CV part# ?

Is this true see below info I found on net.
(can I use a CV made for type 4 car 411 412?)

VW part no. 113 501 331D Bug and Bus CV joints don't have the same ability to operate at as severe a drive angle as the type 4 joint used in the type 181. Thus will operate up to an angle of approximately 21 degrees, versus 17 degrees for the Bus joint.

However, as a temporary fix, the Bus joint (VW part no. 211 501 331B) can be made to work.

The type 4 and 181 CV joint can be fitted to a Beetle transmission. Just use the transmission flange from the original on the new transmission. It's only this flange that is different on the trans.
Is this what I want below for my new Thing Ray?

Steve, yes thats all good information. The Thing uses a type 4 (411/412) CV joint. It is interchangable with the bus but not the same as. If the thing is not lifted or used severely off-road the bus joint is a reasonable substitute. Even when lifted very much the thing joints are not known to hold up well and are usually exchanged for Porsche 930 units. Remember we are not talking about strength here but rather the CVs ability to successfully operate well under sustained extension (high angles). Your info explains the swap of drive flanges on the trans but fails to mention that in order for the T-4 joint to be used on a bug the Thing(181/924/944) stub axles must be used as well.
Look for German (Lobro) T-4 CVs. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

Actualy I am gettting a Thing in Colorado this weekend and Bob sugested I get a CV set, (inner and outer) for trip in another post.

I found new T4 (411-412) CV sets on Internet and was trying to confirm that this was an exact replacment for the Thing--from what Bob said this is true?

Thanks, Steve

Thanks much Bob, wierd thing is I own a 412 and its in my garage--what luck. I guess I'll rob it for my trip.

I also can rob the fuel pump from the Gas Heater BN6 gas heater do you think the BN4 uses the same Fuel Pump?

Do you think I should grease the CVs on the thing some how before before the trip from Colorado to Wisconsin?

What can I expect for cruse speed on flats with thing if it is tuned and runnning well.

80 Vangon
71 Ghia
74 Beetle
74 412
73 Thing Soon :-)

Steve as a spare for highway use just grab a bus CV and snap ring pliers to swap it if needed. I`ve had my Thing 5 yrs and no problem with the gas heater . I would definately lube the CVs if the car has been stored for a yr or more. Its a job but better done at your covvenience than road side repair. You should be able to cruise nicely at 60-perhaps 65. The thing has a lower R&P than the bug and less top end can be expected. Not a big difference but some. Get some photos of the trip if you can to share here. Thanks and good luck. Bob Ingman

Gas heater is currently not! working--may be a cold one going over the pass Brrrrrrrrrr!

I'm flying from Madison, WI to my sisters in Grand Junction Colorado tomorrow and will wait for a warm day after Saturday to head back?pray for a Chinook wind.

I've never seen the Thing but I have picks and my brother in law has been driving it for a couple of weeks without problems. The father of the girl that owned it is a Pediatrician that works with my sister who is a Neonatology?s at the hospital in Grand Junction CO.

By the way it will be getting a T4 / DTM soon after I get it back. Hopefully this will get the MPH up a bit.

One more--are they about the same as a bug in snow--I suppose they must be. It's about 5 hours in the mountains from Grand Junction to Denver may see some on top of the pass.

Yes they are very similar in the snow. But Not to worry I-70 from Grand Junction to Denver is the best maintained stretch of highway in the US. It will be passable.
Before leaving check the condition of all hoses on the car. Fuel lines are problematic if ignored for a long period of time. have good fuel lines and vac hose. Check fuel line from tank to carb. Good luck. Bob Ingman
