Upgrading to an alternator

Hi all,
I'm thinking about upgrading to a 55 amp alternator on my 74' Thing.
It has a stock AH 1600 with Weber ICT 34's. Is there anything I
should be aware of?

If you now have a generator then you will need to change fuel pump and fuel pump rod as well as the stand and hope the crossbar for your carbs will clear the larger diameter alt (probably will). You will need to eliminate the voltage regulator and wire the alt direct. All has been covered before.
Best of luck. Bob Ingman

Bob,
What's the reason for pump change? Also with the webers, I'm
using the block mounted swivel mount.

Waynek the reason for the pump change is that the increased diameter of the alt causes interference with the old fuel pump. When VW went to alt on the T-1 engine they changed the pump to clear it (tipped away). Doing that also required a pump push rod of 1mm greater length.
You should be OK on the cross bar but in case be prepared to use an extension on the mounts
Also the blue wire from the regulator to the warning light on the dash HAS to be hooked up again or the alt will not transmit its charge to the battery. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

MAY NOT BE NECCESSARY IF THE PUMP IS ALREADY THE SLANTED KIND

Thanks guys,
The pump needs to be changed, found that one out after I asked
the question.
All the parts are ordered and I'm looking foreward to switching
over.
