I know of a fellow here in SC that has several of these cars in a junkyard. But here is the thing. If i post to the list his name and number, he gets a bunch of calls, and suddenly he will jack up the price on everything........or worse, when i need something, it will no longer be there. He is a VW junkyard, so he knows he has some odd cars, buyt no one EVER comes to get parts off the 411/412's but me.
I am more than happy to share this number with INDIVIDUALS that plan on coming to SC to hunt/pick the stuff up themselves.he is an old guy in poor health, and you got to come prepared to get what you need..........but if you can't drive to SC to pick it up, there is no point in bothering the old guy, you know? He used to be a regular selling used stuff at SE VW events, but his health has scaled him back the last few years.

My point exactly....thanks for making it. I have been working on and searching out 411/412 cars since I was 16. My first car was a 411 4 door.
I know where more than a handful sit right now. Truthfully...about 15-20 all told. Some are in horrendous shape, some in excellent shape...some in really obscure locations, some in dangerous locations. Most of these will either instantly become unobtanium or get scrapped or become unaffordable....if hoardes of people come calling.
I try to put people onto as many good parts tracks as I can, but I also have spent time letting people know on this forum....in a few off-hand rants....that buying one of these cars will not be an excercise in simply calling around or networking on the internet to get parts over a 3 month period to rebuild your sweety. These take roads trips sometimes. Days in the junkyard hunting down mythological parts, meeting and greeting owners of hulks....numerous times...before you ever get around to asking to buy something, just to gain their trust. People saved these cars in their barns, backyards and junkyards because they were unique...and sometimes because they drove them for years and thought they were great. Ownin one of these years ago, and rarely seeing another one....you always got the feeling that these were unique cars and you should not get rid of it yet.
I have said several times that these vehicles are the last frontier of ACVW restoration. They will be expensive. Both due to lack of parts, and the fact that they were rare when they were built...just because in comparison...they shipped few of them here.
I think what the guy in Alabama did was kinda stupid...jerking you around like that. But...on the other hand, the prices people are now asking for these vehicles are NOT incorrect. I said this on this forum two years ago....that these vehicles would start coming out of the woodwork. It has begun. They will not be cheap any longer...unfortunately. They will go the route of the type III.
In 1983 or so, I could buy a decent fastback for $500. I could buy a decent squareback for $200. I bought two 66 wagons and a 68 fastback in 88, for $175. I bought a running 69 for for $75.
Back in the early 90's, I bought a 412 wagon that simply needed a tranny for $150. I bought a 411 wagon...needing an engine, for $100. I bought a 412 4-door in 93 for $50 for parts. The list goes on.
Unfortunatly...they are getting scarcer...even as they get more numerous. This is also why I try and tell people to do these cars right when they get them. Replace as much as you can. Get the car running as good as you can. I have seen too many people get into these cars...and give up...because of the scarcity of parts. Their basket cases usually end up at the scrapper....unusable. There is already a movement of people doing the high customization thing. Running totally different engines, suspensions, interiors...simply to get the "looks" of the body. As admirable as that effort is, this car is much to scarce to survive that process....and unlike the bug, this chassis does not lend itself to that level of customization and can rarely be reversed from it...making more unusable scrap...and further drying up parts and supplies. In short....know what you are getting into with these cars. Be circumspect in your dealings with people. Go easy. Do not assume you will get these cars for $200 here or $300 there. These are not bugs. Sorry...end of rant. Ray

My apologies if my post seemed a bit harsh. If you wish to keep sources of parts to yourself or selves thats fine. I feel by the inherent nature of this forum (and the internet in general) that this is a sharing of information place and should be as inclusive as possible. If folks want to quietly share infomation descreetly they can do so with that email tab at the bottom of every members post---just try not to dangle the hints in the forum.
As usuall, Ray is right on. Why else would a wrecking/salvage outfit in Washington State buy rusting tree riddled 412's in Alabama. Times are indeed changing for this automobile. My restoration experience began in the late 80's with a Deluxe. I did it, then went on with my life. When I returned to restore it a second time in 2000, I discovered the car and parts had quadrupled in price. Not that the 411/412 will reach those levels, but I hope everyone understands that prices will continue to rise.

being new to the whole VW restoring scene, I would gladly share what I know and where the vehicles I know of are, no offense to Ray or anyone else, I feel if you really need the parts and I know where they are, I will give you all the help possible in obtaining them. I do the same with my Vans as well (even though their parts seem to grow on trees). I guess thats just how I am, I beleive in share and share alike. I would not post anyone's name and number who I know would not appreciate the business or added advertising. Lets face it most of the VW yards SHUN these vehicles and would rather pass them over. The yard I trade the most with ONLY sells parts off these vehicles to me. HE also charges a SET PRICE for things. Say a headlight switch from a salvage 411/12 is the same price as one from a van/Beetle/Super/ Type 3.... Parts is Parts to him. Hell he has told me to come yank a 2 litre out of an old 411 and I can have it........ I guess its all in who you deal with... thats my one run on sentence...............

Yep, I agree gents. I also have one or two places that sell at normal prices to me. I guess what I am getting at is to please be careful dealing with people. Some of these people....appreciate knowledgable low pressure people who are sometimes willing to pay just a bit more than normal price....but are always careful in what they ask for, remove the parts themselves..and do no damage. I pass on as much to people as I can. But I generally send people to the "odd" places...off the web, for the very reason Eric noted. I don't like to tease the whole crowd. I also do not pcik and choose who I pass info onto. But generally, even the odd places I might send someone too....that are still fair with their prices....will list you a price, and its take it or leave it....not haggleing day...not a swap meet. And to be fair...i also have a few choice parts under my scrutiny that are atached to parts I do not need....that I am waiting to buy myself. I keep those under wraps until I get what i need. I rarely buy huge quantities of body parts to hoard...unless I know the car in about to scrapped. Then if I can't buy the stuff....I pass on the info quick!. Its tough working on these cars. I also feel like you do Deathbus...I try and tell people who really need the parts...where they are. The more of these we can get on the road...the more chance there will be that some of the big boys may start making parts we can't get.
My main and only worry sometimes, is passing on the info for really hard to find parts, to someone who aquired a type 4 for next to nothing...and didn't really want one. Some people will just try to get a car like running as a beater. Those cars do not really last very long. They are generally driven until wrecked...or the engine or tranny blows. They are then scrapped usually. Its hard to tell who is serious about working on what they aquired...or is just trying to make money from the rest of us..or who may be just a parts waste. In doing that...I also can't read minds or allow myself to be prejudiced. Thats also why this forum is nice. By chatting with everyone...we can see who actually cares about what they are doing. Ray

There are certain places I share and ones I dont... the ones that everyone can easily find and the ones that dont keep the cars around very long... those are all fair game... but the places that no one knows about and keep their cars until they become one with the earth... i try to keep to myself... I know where half a dozen or so type 4's are... and if you put minimal effort into figuring out what I know you will find them too... I probably even have pictures of them in my website somewhere linking them to their owner...
If I told everyone I know about every VW I know where is... then what is left for me? maybe I wouldn't get to drive by that mint looking notchback everyday... trying to get the guts to go beg them to give it to me

Yep...same here. The few places I don't tell anyone about....would be very hard to find. They are kinda off the map. One of which is so hairy...I don't go there in the summer. Only the winter...else you will get killed by snakes, bugs, spiders, rats, dogs...or maybe just break a leg by tripping over old oil well heads in the waste high grass. As you noted...all else is fair game. Ray
