Long time type 411/412 admirer, hopefully owner soon!

Well, a 30 year family friend has at least one 411 and one 412 wagon in his private VW junkyard. I don't have any air-cooled VW experience, but decided I must have one a few days ago (yes, I am in fact, a masochist...), but haven't been able to get a hold of him. Anyway, I don't foresee any problems procuring them if they actually belong to him (been sitting there for years). I think he bought one new back in the day, but I don't know if that one is still there. I've been looking around a little bit, and I'm thinking if I get the 412 I'll probably replace the slushbox with a 901 Porsche unit...
Just from lookin' around in here, it sounds like struts might be mighty hard to come by, especially since this won't have to be practical and I want to slam this thing on it's nvts. I'm very surprised that the Super Beetle Struts aren't compatible at least somewhat. It sounds like somebody has something figured out on here though with the Audi strut inserts.
Also what about brake compatibality with other cars? I'm also thinking fitting Porsche alloys (5x130) will be a must as I've seen some pics and it look hot. How have these people done it- adapters, redrill, Porsche components? [/i]

Ray is the expert on the struts. Do a search on him (raygreenwood) and you should get all the info you need about that.

I imagine that some people use adapters, but redrilling would be the best. Unless I'm mistaken, the type3 rear drums have the same part number, so if you could find someone that sells type3 drums already drilled for the bolt pattern, you would be one step ahead. I have to double check those part numbers to see if I know what I'm talking about or not.

Hope it all works out for you on getting that car.

Yeah, me too! I think he is on vacation, I haven't been able to get a hold of him...The only thing I'm afraid of is he will be a dick about me trying to buy the cars. I think if he understands that I want them for myself, and not trying to sell for a fortune or something, he'll let 'em go to a good home.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember Ray saying something about putting his car in storage, and he had a lot of personal stuff coming up. Hope he gets it all worked out.

The 412 community is lost without him :(. Well maybe not lost, but definately in an unfamiliar place without directions.

Thanks for the support. Though my engine has been in slow build for a year now....at least I have been able to occasionally go out and tinker with the rest of the car or just fondle it...in the carport. But now its 200 miles away in a storage garage. Oh well....I will get back to it soon.

Yes, the rear drums fro type 4 and late type 3 are the same. If you can find some of the German built two piece drums...those are better. The cast drums made in Brazil...check carefully. Most are machined off center.

I'm not sure if the 5 bolt stubs are the same depth of drum. If you buy a CB products rear disc braking system for a type 3 with four bolt, it bolts up with slight mods to the bearing cover thickness. The five bolt may do the same.

Be carful on the front suspension. This car will kill you if you get the balance wrong. At high speed it is rear heavy...and handle just like a 911. When set up carefully...it handles extremely well. Like no other VW.
Slamming it will indeed not be too practical....but if you are doing that, then a little welding to the strut cartridge area and moving the spring perch downward, will allow you to keep the stock spring compression length and simplify installing the audi cartridge greatly. Problem is...with original stock 185-sr-15s....high sidewalls.....the rear under carriage clearance is already only a hair over 5" at rest. If you drop the front spring perches too low, they will contact the insides of the tires. Just be careful. Ray

Ah, thanks Ray-I guess I'll be careful not to lower a 412 too much-you're front strut modification sounds good...Now I just need to get that MIG welder-oh yeah, and a 412 too
