73 strut inserts same as 74

Post by alsehendo »

I just picked up some 74 412 strut inserts on e-bay last week. Odd thing is the seller listed two difrent sets one was for up 73 and one for the 74. Lucky for me ????maybee???? if is truly for a 412, nobody bid on the 74 and I got them for about $35 were as the oters ran up int $70+ Is their realy a difference in the 74 or was the seller mis-informed. He was not two informed because the add title said VW type IV and not Type 4 but in the discription distinctly said 412 and 411.

Type 4 and type IV....are the same thing really...to those of us who drive "type 4's" :) . Actually, type 4 is not an engine type. It is a vehicle type. It originally represented the 411 and 412 series. The type 4 engine started out in these, came from these..and only later went into other cars.

Yes there are two different struts. The early one, went into the original 411 with the plane bearing type of strut bushing. Most of those never saw this continent. Those stopped in late 70 early 71. The same cartridge with the long step on the top section of the rod also fit the later ball bearing style bonded rubber strut bushing, with the symmetrical bolt pattern to Aug 73. My 412 had symmetrical style bonded rubber bushings and it is Nov. of 72...technically a 73. The later strut cartridge fit the assymmetrical bushing (non-bonded). It has a short step and bolt at the top.
But...here is the funny part. KYB and BOGE and a few others had a universal cartridge. It was sinply the early cartridge with a spacer sleeve that slipped on to allow it to fit both models...so it could very well fit both early of late if the spacer sleeve is included. Ray
