Anyone got any figures for the following:

Any flow rate figures for the stock 1700 heads with standard valves

What's the lift of the standard 1700 cam?

What's the diameter of the standard exhaust tailpipe.

Strange collection of questions I know. In case you're wondering I'm building a type 3 engine with fuel injection. The engine is basically stock, but with 1776cc (69x90.5). I'm debating whether to try and use the type three FI or adopt the type four FI. If I go the type four route, I'd be better off trying to mimick the type four engine set-up. I'd adopt the same valve sizes and make the heads flow similar to the standard type four. I also need to know if the exhausts are roughly the same size, i know the type three large bore exhaust can be 'expanded' slightly with a large hammer. I'm trying to sort out a cam.....but that's a long story (see post in aircooled tech)

I'll see what I can find, but yes...a lot of things you can mimic. You will still need to do some minor MPS tuning for fuel mixture, but if you change the ECU to a type 4, change the TPS...(many of the late type 3's use some of the same as the type 4), and change to a matching type 4 MPS....all else in the system will be the same.
I would run valves similar to what people change the type 4 to. I run 42 x 38 valves on my 1.7.
The problem you will have is feeding the air. The plenum , runners and TB of the type 3 are slightly too small. Keeping the type 3 air system set-up, will cause you to have to do enough tweaking (not bad...just tedious)...that you may as well keep the type 3 electrical..and adjust the MPS and fuel pressure to suit what you are doing. Just be sure that if you stay with type 3 parts..or a combo of both, that you use the late model type 3 system with the diaphram type MPS. Ray
