Bob Job

Post by Bob Ingman »

What does anyone think about bobing the rear off a Thing to get a Porsche 6 cylinder into it? It would be a Bob Job I guess you`ld say.
Two hundred thirty bolt in HP with a 901 5-speed transaxle.
All you lurkers join in on this one.(FYM) Best of luck. Bob Ingman

Bob, that sounds like a great idea. Forget what purists say, the Thing is meant to be modified. 230 HP would be awesome. Is this going to be a new offroad project or are you going to cut up your old one?

LB good to find you with us again. Have you been lurking or just gone on vacation?
Actually this is kind of food for thought. Personally I would have no reservation about doing anything I had to do to get a Porsche 6 cyl and 5-speed into my Thing. I picture it as being like a GT car with the engine exposed from the rear. I could live with that. Stay with us. Bob Ingman

Hey Bob, kind of been lurking around lately. Lots changed in a year, graduated college, got married, started new career, just signed my life away for a new house yesterday. So I've been kind of busy. But that means I will finally have a garage to work on the Thing. I wont have much money for it, but now it will be easy to work on it. Pretty exciting. Anyway, an open engine compartment in the Thing with a Porshe sounds great. GT Thing, Awesome!

How about a WRX Turbo Suby engine as long as your going that far--or is watercooled out of the question? It may be a lot cheeper, 230HP, and probably fit in the bay being it's a 4 cylinder.

Porche power is what I would do if I could find one cheep enough however.

Suby watercooled I would consider in a bus but in a Thing Bug or Ghia I like the Porsche 6 cyl with 5 speeds foreward. Good luck. Bob Ingman

I've seen something like this... if memory serves right it was Illinois or Indiana... not certain what they stuffed in....

The car looked strange -- the rear end looked like a mellon -- all sides no center....

Bob... maybe you're thinking of coming over to the baja darkside? I've driven this setup... the car was lightened to 1100 lbs... add back 2 hefty guys and we were at 130 mph in no time.

Baja time?
