Wacky 'wagen weekend...

Post by ubercrap »

Well, Saturday morning I headed out to pick up that 412 in Dallas that I won on ebay. It's about a 6.5 hour drive for me. After getting a couple of hours down the road, clear into Oklahoma, I had the sudden feeling that I better call and confirm that everything was OK for me to pick the car up. Well, I called-and guess what-the guy that knew what was going on wasn't there. The guy that was there kept talking about some "slip" I needed for them to release the car. Nobody ever told me anything about it. Basically, after much arguing, the guy told me there was no way in hell he would let me take the car without the slip. Luckily, I was only about 2 hours from home, but still, that's a major pain and quite a bit of money in gas in a V8 pickup. I guess I'll have to get it straightened out this week and get it next weekend. Continuing, when I got home on Saturday, I called the guy in Arkansas with the wrecked gold '74 coupe and asked if I could pick it up on Sunday. He said I could, so I drove down there and towed it back without incident yesterday! The car is in excellent shape and the accident damage is not as bad as it looked in the pictures even, though there are some issues with the quarter panel and rear edge of the door. No major rust or dents anywhere except for that rear corner. It apparently was last registered in '87 in Washington state and the odometer says 97,xxx mi. Seats and headliner are near perfect, and the carpet is good. The dash has some cracks. Though the engine is missing, the fuel injection components are in the car, along with the flywheel and some other stuff. There is also a straight, rust-free coupe RH rear quarter panel/fender in there, along with the original dented one, which was removed of course. There is also a set of tail lights with the car too. It also came with a front bumper which was off of the car. I was satisfied for $250 for sure! This car is way too nice to part I think, so maybe I'll get that wagon down the road from me to part out and donate the engine for this car and use the front end sheet metal, etc.. for the '73. Next weekend: Dallas, to pick up the '73!

It was a lot of fun actually. I saw many cars along the way, including at least one of each: Beetle, Ghia, Bus, Vanagon, Caddy, Rabbit, Jetta, Golf, Splitty Double-cab, 412 sedan and wagon, Type III, Crosley 2dr. coupe, Opel Manta (I think), Sunbeam Alpine, and some weird little foreign sedan I wasn't able to identify, a Simca perhaps?

Some of the cars belonged to the guy that I got the coupe from. A couple were at salvage yards, or in fields, or sitting at some old repair shop, or for sale at the side of the road. I have an eagle eye for vehicle spotting.

I know of a junkyard where all of those cars listed...reside together. Ray

The wakiest things I have found around here have been Merkurs, and a couple of TR6's.

A few miles from here, a friend's uncle used to have some old, old Renault sitting out in a field, but yeah, I think Ray's place tops anything I've seen...

Sadly, this place is almost gone. Its also pretty dangerous. I have to hunt down the owner when ever I go there. Sometimes that takes a couple days. You can walk right in...but you could also get shot. I only go there in the dead of winter lest I get eaten or snake bit. Ray

Gotta luv tick and chigger season! In Alabama it lasts from about middle March to late October, so we only get about 4 months to go snatch up parts. There is one 412 wagen at my local yard that you can only get to in the dead middle of winter and you still have to use a machetti.
