hydrolic lifter adjust

Post by dave menche »

I have a 86 Vanagon. It has low compression on one cylinder. I'd like to assure that the valves are closing correctly. How does one check/adjust the hydrolic lifter equiped valves.

thanks dave

To verify they are closing for your compression check, adjust ALL to .006 clearance just like doing a bug.

For the leakdown check, take the rockers OFF. (Jakes idea)

If the motor has sat around, it might have a little rust on the cylinder walls, and MAY get better as it runs.

The "right" way of preloading them depends on who you ask.

I check the radius on my screws, fix/replace as required, and give it 1/4 turn past contact, and then forget about it.

Some folks like to _leave_ a small clearance, as it assists in pumping the air out WHEN it gets in the lifters by providing a full stroke, at the minor inconvienence of bit more noise.

IIRC, the Bentley manual says something like 2.5 turns past contact, but I really can't remember at the moment, nor find my manual.

And how "low" is low? ARe they all close, or is one much different?
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The original VAG repair manual says 2 full turns after contact to preload the lifters..
If they are trapped with air or they are bit worn. try to adjust 1/4 to 1/2 turn after contact.I adjusted my lifters today with the VAG method today with "ticking" noise as a result(2 full turns)...then i re-adjusted them with 1/2 turn and it was no noise from the lifters at all..
