What it the capacity of the stock gas tank

My handbook says 10.5 gallons, but I ran it dry and was only able to fill up with 9.8 gallons.

You may not always be able to get the last bit out of the bottom of the tank, especially if the pickup screen is clogged up at the base. If your tank isn't dented it should hold ~10½, could be the pump is out of calibration - in which case I'd buy all my gas there until they fix it :D

My sister has worked in the gas pump installation, maintenance and servicing industry in Los Angeles for over 25 years. She tells me that gas pumps used in cities with air polution issues by law have a vapor recovery system that limits the extent to which a gas tank can be filled. This allows the gas fumes to return to the supply tank at the station rather than being released into the environment. When the vapor pressure from the gas being pumped reaches the specified limit the pump disengages and stops delivering gas. This does not mean your tank is "really" full but rather that the vapor recovery system is operating properly. As the air temperature becomes warmer, the the vapor recovery system ingages sooner. The owner's manual that came from the factory with my Thing states 10.5 gallons as the car's fuel capacity. K-mann

Since your car is metric, the exact tank volume is 40 liters. The pickup tube is about 3/4-1" above the bottom of the tank, so you can't get it all out. The most I've ever been able to pump into my car was 38.5 liters, and at that, I coasted up to the pump having run out within a stone's throw of the station. The filler tube that leads down to the tank also extends into the tank, forcing the tank to always have an air space at the top.

One time when I was really low on gas driving in Mexico, the pump at the remote gas station said I pumped 40.6 liters into my 40 liter tank. Pretty hard to argue with the station owner when he's got a machine gun slung over his shoulder.
