If there is anything wrong with a piston, it's junk, besides I have never hear anything good about 96's for Type 4's. If you want to build a good engine, try a stock 2 litre with solid lifters (these would be 94 mm pistons). Ray could tell you how this set up would work on a 412 manual. I know it works great on both my vans with late 4 speed trannies. Hydraulic lifters tend to reduce the reving of the engine, Thats why I use solid for my vans, because to do anything with a stock 2 litre in a van, you have to rev the piss out of them. Hydraulic lifters might be the way to go.
