Disk Brakes: Can this be done?
My preference would be four-wheel disks with no loss of hand-brake. Front disks would be a second choice. I know Type 4 choices aren't as great as Type 1, but is there a choice to be had?

The rear drums are the same as a late type 3. The stub axle is a bit different. I will be adding these next year. The CB kit for type 3 should fitm but something to beware of. The nice cast bracket CB makes, fits in place of the backing plate and the metal piece welded to it, that holds the star wheel adjusters. I am not sure the backing plates are the same thickness. If they are not, you will have to have the outer bearing cover milled slightly to take up the slack. No biggie. The disk is a modified 914 rear I believe.
In the kit, I think you get new rear stubs for a type 3. It would simply be easier to have the center ring of the type 4 stub turned to fit in the hole in the center of the disc...if its smaller.
The caliper I believe is a Kelsey hayes type GM sliding single piston unit. It has e-brake hook-up for the existing type 3 cables so it should fit the type 4.
The 2 and 4 door models have propotioning valves in the right rear under the back seat. Those should be fine, but rebuild kits do not exist any longer. They are the same as the 914. The wagons did not have the proportioning valve. You can buy numerous aftermarket proportioning valves that work just fine. Ray
