412 Auto Tranny Question

My 73 Auto Wagon.

Leaking pan gasket.. easy enought to fix.

Problem though. Reverse has absolutly NO power. I can shift it back and forth from drive to reverse and finally get enough reverse to get going. When I put it into drive from reverse, I get a "bouncing" or a "bumping". I thought maybe it could have been locked up rear drums. The left was locked and I repaired it. I jacked up he right side and it spun freely, so I tryed it again with the same results.

Question. With the pan gasket leaking so bad.. I mean POURING, is the tranny not building up enough internal pressure to shift correctly?

I'm no expert, but that sounds reasonable to me. Good thing it is just the pan gasket. That one's fairly cheap.

Yes, it could be low. Don't play around with a low tranny. The parts that actually get killed the fastest on these trannys are the oil pumps. Most people do not know this. You cannot properly check fluid level in any gear other than drive...when running. The proper procedure for using teh dipstick, is to warm it up, lock the parking brake, put it in Drive, then check the level. Its a big difference. I recommend blocking the front wheel for safety as well.
It could also be a slipping reverse band. Its adjustable externally. Check the type 3 Bentley for info. Ray

Luckily the guy that owns the shop where the car is, is more than willing to give me a hand. He checked the tranny exactly the way you said Ray, and it was 2 quarts low. So I filled it and it seemed to have more power, but thats when we noticed the VALDEZ happening under the car and we shut it off. Monday or Tuesday I am going to haul it to the house and will replace the tranny gasket, I will update.

Deathbus,
Never should have mentioned not dropping an engine on a 412 before. That's probably the reason your tranny started leaking. :D dennis

LMAO! SO thats what did it!

Actually the reason it started leaking is probably the fact that the ole guy who owned it just simply PARKED it in 1995.

Before you hose the thing off, make sure its just a gasket. It could be a seal anywhere past the torque converter, or even a leaking screw in test port plug on the outside....there are about 6 of them. If it is coming from the little "vent" on the top of the transfer case...you have problems internal. Usually a stuck valve in the body or a clog. Just look it over carefully. Ray
