Bentley T3 vs. 003/010 Tech Manual

Post by 67 T1 »

I need to replace seals on auto tranny, 74 412 wagon (leaks like a sieve). Ordered the Overhaul ket, 003 1969-76 from Makco. I also ordered the Tech manual 003/010. Looking at past posts, saw that Ray strongly suggested getting the Type 3 manual from Bently. Went to the site and saw $40, and decided to wait after dropping $73 for the other items.

Has anyone compared the Tech manual to the Bentley T3 manual. Would hate to drop another $40 if not needed. Anyone? thanks.

Here's the answer. I now have both the Bentley T3 manual and the ATGS.

The Bentley cost about $40, but all the pictures a crisp and full of detail. Plus there is all the other info about engines, suspension, etc.

The ATGS, $17, is an exact copy of Ch 8 of the Bentley, word for word, picture for picture. But the pictures suck. The details are lost.

So pick your posion. In my opinion my $17 was wasted, I need detailed pictures. As Ray has posted numerous times, buy the Bentley T3 if you're going to work on your transmission.

One note. I have a 74 transmission. The transmission depicted in the manuals are of an earlier model tranny.

The type 3 tranny generally differs in detail early to late...only on the outer seal assembly for the stub axles and the way the stub axles join to the differential. All else should be the same....configuration, parts lists...automatic section. The type 4 tranny generally IS the type 003 tranny with the late model type 3 differenial section, but with very slightly different final drive ratios. The cover over the top of the two case jining areas ...auto to differential section...may be slightly difffernt...but its just sheet metal. Ray
