74 thing sterring column bushing

Post by 74 Thing »

I had to replaced the bearing on my sterring wheel in order to get rid of the up and down slop but it did not work. I have been informed there is some sort of plastic/rubber bushing in there that goes in the middle of the bearing between that and the steering shaft. If memory serves me right there was a spacer in there but it was metal. Can anybody confirm what the correct spacer is made or, rubber, plastic or metal. Thanks.

well, on my 74 super beetle... that i think has the same setups as a thing (we just got a 73 thing) I replaced some bushing inside the colum, it was plastic i think... it has been a good 5 years since i did this so dont remember to much, i do know it was not rubber or metal. but the new bushing i got took out all the slop in the wheel.... i do remember it was fairly well down in the colum. but simple to replace non the less.

It sounds like you may have gotten the wrong bushing?
