Thermostat housing sealant, is it needed?

We are replacing the thermostat housing on a 86 vanagon. the old one cracked. The old one appeared to have a sealant on the head to housing seal (along with the o-ring) Is it a good idea to add some sort of sealant to the head/thermostat housing seal, and if so, what kind?

thanks dave

I have looked at the two wbx engines in my garage, they did not have any kind of sealant on the thermostat housing, just the O ring.

THe only thing you put on an o-ring is perhaps a little oil, never sealant, it prevents the o-ring from doing its job correctly.
