73 gas heater

Post by radioman »

There must be a billion comments on this but I will open again. My 73 has as near as I can tell complete gas heater that I have not used or tried because of fear. This winter I plan to take it out and R&R to get it runnning. I have some info from the net but was just wondering if anyone had any good advice. I cannot afford to ship it to someone who can do the job...I need to try to see if it is OK on my own. But I don't want to blow myself up ....during or after the take down. Does anybody make the fiber-board piece in the dash? Mine is full of holes. I guess I can re-do it with something but havn't a clue how to. Help!!! Bill bblide@sc.rr.com

Heater is a BN4 anual at link below.

http://www.conservatory.com/vw/manuals_ ... arBN4.html

The 181 Service manual also has a whole section on heater if you can find one.

The overheat switch has a fuse on it you can check. (attached to heater housing under little door looking thing).

The safty switch also has reset on end oposite of the wires. I've reset this on vans several times and the heater begins to work. Glass box looking thing with lever on top. Flip the lever in oposite direction to reset. This breaker will blow for several reasons. Bad glow plug; Fule Supply was cut off while on, (ran out of gas); combustion dose not start in 180 sec from turnning on heater.

Don't defeat breaker or fuse with jumpers if they blow again have the heater serviced.
