Type 4 Ratio Rockers

Post by 1976bus »

Has anyone heard of a supplier of ratio rockers for a 2000cc type 4 motor?

Thanks.

Higher than the 1.25 or 1.3:1 that they already have? I think Pauter makes some that are 1.5:1, but I beleive they are roller tipped. Also...bear in mind, that since thestock cam left ssomething to desired, and higher ratio rockers will increase the strain on the valve train, thebest course of action would be to get a better cam and keep the stock rockers or get 1.7 rockers so you can use 911 adjusters. I was under the impression that all T-4 motors came w/ 1.3:1 rockers. Which years/models/engine#s had 1.25:1??

Being a newbie to building an engine what would be the difference in the various rockers, what would be my benefit to using a 1.7 to 1 rocker ??

You misunderstand, the "1.7" refers to the 1700 type 4 engine rocker that has an 8mm stem. The other type 4 engines 1.8 (1800) and 2.0 use a 10mm stem.

1.7 ratio rockers do exist in the V-8 world but those engines could be considered "race spec" aka "Full Tilt Boogie".
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

So what is the benefit to using the 911 adjusters?

Less wear on the valve stem tip and less side loading of the valve stem. Much better/more precise geometry control. I believe if you look around in piles of type 4 lifters, that they vary a little. I have heard that there were some early 1.25 lifters, but I am not sure of that. They are supposed to be 1.3. Ray

Use stock rockers and GENUINE 911 valve adjusters...

less than 3% of the cams on the market have the proper ramp rates for any higher ratio rocker.

I rounded up 5 sets of 1700s and found that quite a few of them
spec'd out to 1.35-1.39:1 ratio!

Guess which 8 rockers I will be using with Jakes Annihilator cam?

Oh yea! Guys, if you dissasemble type 4 rockers, you are on your
own putting them BACK together correctly! What a PAIN to get right!

Well, notice how many places to the RIGHT of the decimal there is there,
.... that's hundreths.

The difference is small , due to manufacturing tolerances at VW(HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!).......

The *advertised ratio is 1.3:1.
:D

What you get is what what you get......

I just went JY shopping and rounded up a few engines CHEEP
($75 each!) and took all the rockers and measured EACH one
and kept the ones that gave me the MOST lift!

And the pauters are atleast 1.51:1 with the Pauters, not the advertised 1.48:1

Yes, please realize that what advertisers use as stated values
are MINUMUM!

You know, no one would complain if there was 2.0 oz of
M&Ms in a bag marked 1 7/8th oz....

Unfortunately, if they give you MORE than what you planned for,
you come up with clearance issues, which Jake can tell you about....

I know this is a REALLY REALLY old thread, but I think the information is solid ( total lame dad joke pun intended)

Legit question:

So assuming that the factory rocker arms are 1.25:1
and I'm using hydraulic lifters.

Would it be better to upgrade to:

Web cam 107i. ( Hydraulic )

Or go with solid lifters and go with:

Engle 110

Sorry I did not get to this to reply. Just an opinionfrom experience....I do not consider hydraulic lifters an upgrade. They have their own issues and problems getting set up right.
I would go with solid lifters. Ray
