===Newbie Question -- Ice Raacing a Sand Rail?????===

Post by MNAirHead »

Howdy.

I'm aware that many of the people on this forum can't imagine going to the beach to find it rock-solid and hidden under 3 feet of frozen rain.....

I just did a swap for a fairly good sand rail... In MN we don't have many places to use a beast like this.

I've known guys who Ice Raced KTM motor cross...

Anyone on the board used Driven a Snow Rail or Ice Rail?

Before putting the effort into it, would love some pointers or comments.

Many years ago we took a vw powered rail out into the snow and ice. It was fantastic. We trailered up to a favorite snowmobile spot and let loose. With lots of power, paddle tires and a cutting brake we were able to run all over the mountain. It was too much fun!

Paddle tires --- would anyone know if normal studded snow tires would also work -- or is the weight ratio off?

Snow tires will work fine on hard packed snow or ice. We were driving on 5-6 ft of snow so the only hope was to float on the snow. Wide tires help. If the snow is shallow or powdery or slushy you will dig in easy and tall skinny tires work better. Most ice racing I've watched on TV the cars use tall skinny tires with spikes. A baja that is chained up will go great in the snow.

In a rail one key will be to dress for success!
