Montgomery VW Meltdown

The VW show in Montgomery was excellent

Of course, the majority of VWs were Type 1 (two split ovals), but there were ten - fifteen Type 2, about ten Karman Ghia, and three Type 3 (one fantastic Notch). Of course, no Type 4
Unfortunately, my 412 still has the tranny out (although, I have it back in one piece with new gaskets/seals) and I'm replacing the CV boots.
Discovered that one CV joint is ruined, scared and pitted. And I can't get one of the CV joints off of the shaft as the end has been flared from someone banging the end with a hammer.
This project is a true case of two steps forward and one step back, or is it one step forward and two steps back?

Hate to hear that about your daughter, hope she has a quick recovery.
I saw a brown type 2 and walked up to a lady sitting in front of it and asked if it belonged to Doug. She said no, but that you and her husband were friends and worked on some projects together. I had my two boys with me so I didn't chew the fat too long with her.

I'm hoping to have the 412 up and running by 29 Aug. I've decided to scavenge an axle off of my spare 412 and again 'hope' to have one good CV joint and an axle that is not flared at the end. What a pain.
Hey, the tranny rebuilt was quite painful. I'm trying to collect my thoughts and pictures and put together something useful for fellow adventurers. There were a few areas where hindsight kicked my butt.

It would be awesome to see you and the 412 there at the show, I have already told some of the folk that the Type 4's already need their own catagory, at the Bug Blast we are grouped in with the type 3's.

The pain continues. Took an axle off of the spare 412, and discovered another ruined CV joint. So this afternoon I'll take the other axle off in hopes of getting one good CV. What a pisser, of 6 CV joints only three are good. I fear this may be systemic. Word to the wise for all who read, check your CV boots for cracks/tears.
Anyway, the goal is to make the show. If the 411-412 get their own catagory, you're a shoe in. The second-hand paint job on mine is peeling, clear-coat flakes cover the hood. Maybe I'll put the extra hood on, albeit not the same color.

DB, sure you've seen this, but just in case. FOR SALE: 411-412 fastback rear deck, excellent condition. With the deck lid comes,...the rest of the car. 500 CD (about $375). Quite the haul though, 2,841.3 miles, driving time 43hrs 42 minutes. WAIT, that's from Montomgery, heck from B'ham you can knock off 90 miles and about an hour and a half
