Well before I get into it just thought i'd introduce myself, never posted in any of the shoptalkforums before, just been a visitor until now. Some great information being shared by even greater people.

Okay well in light of the post "Type 4 quarter mile times?" i've once again been questioning my thoughts. I'm working on a '70 karmann ghia, I guess it would be called a resto-custom. In any case I thought I finnaly set in my plans for using a type 4 engine in my ghia. My question is if it is worth it? I want to have a pretty powerfull engine for the ghia, but I dont want to go to far as to be worried about taking it out on long trips or just it being able to get me around everyday. How much horsepower should I be looking for to get the ghia into some respectable times?

About a year ago, I was also trying to decide between a 1776 or a Type IV. Reliability was my primary concern. Consider that the Transporter engine is designed to propell a 4,900 pound vehicle loaded with passengers, camping equipment etc. through the mountains. Now install that same engine (converted to upright) in a vehicle that weighs half as much. As heavy as the Ghia is (compared to an early Beetle), you still have an incredible power to weight ratio! I'm going the 2270cc performance Type IV route and I'm still expecting 1/4 mile ET's that will embarrass camaro's and mustang's, get about 28 to 30 MPG on the highway, EFFORTLESSLY cruise across country at 80 MPH and last well over 100,000 miles. I don't care how well you build a 1776...it will never be able to match a 2270 Type IV as far as reliability and performance.
