Oh, another FYI. Busdepot sent me the wrong rear brake pads. I've got to find the invoice and see if I can return them. These things look like early Beetle or bus brake pads, they can't be but a little over an inch wide.

Thats screwed that BD did that. But they sent me Type 1 oil strainers FOUR TIMES for a Type 4 Strainer, that was a HUGE MESS for a $1 part!
The rear Brake pads are EXACTLY the same as Super Beetle Front pads, just have to do some drilling and grinding for the E brake push rod. And where I get them from they are $20 cheaper than Type 4 pads!
I have never had problems out of CIP1 either, just takes awhile for the stuff to make it through customs into the US and then to Alabama.

Check around for Type3 rear brake shoes, they should be the same. Sure, SB fronts can be made to work but why go through the work unless you have to?

Because they are $20 cheaper than Type 3/4 pads and it takes about 5 minutes to modify them.

The only problem I've found is that what I want is usually out of stock

Let me warn you, be careful of parts quality here. I had some real problems with a set of stainless braided brake hoses I purchased from them - one of them burst before I got out of the driveway, and close examination revealed them to be cheap crap.
I've ordered a lot of other stuff from them in the past without problem, but the brake hoses have caused me to have second thoughts about ordering some stuff from them.

Hell, turns out I didn't even need rear pads, but if I would have received the RIGHT ones

, I'd have replaced anyway.
Got it. No braided brake hoses from CPI

The place I buy my type 3/4 rear shoes in Dallas....uses Mintex pad material. Excellent....but I will be putting discs on soon anyway. Ray

Ray you got a place there that rebuilds your shoes for you?

Nope...these are either new or factory rebuilt...but have Mintex friction material on them. A couple years ago, Hot VW did an article on improving the rear brakes on a bug. I think Kymo had mintex shoes for type 1 and 3 also. Ray

You know.....rear discs are not that hard to install on 411/412. From CB performance....buy their aluminum calper mount castings for type 1/3. The type 3 uses the same rear bearing cover and drum...so the casting will bolt right up with minor clearancing under the bearing cover. They run about $95 a pair. You then need to turn the outer edge of the 411/412 stub axle in a lathe. About 1/8". These will then fit into a 914 rear disc....same as CB uses in the kit. I can get 914 rotors pretty cheap....about $45 dollars ea. If I can find out the part # of the GM type (kelsey hayes) caliper they use in the kit...I can probably get those cheaper too. These have hook-ups for the e-brake too

. The whole thing can proba

bly be done for about $120 less than buying thw hole kit for type 3 from CB. Ray
