I thought 74's had aluminum bumpers, and 1.8 ltr. This might be a 73' instead. sweet car.

They are strange looking bumpers. I think it may just be the distortion that digital cameras provide. Look closely at the mounting points. They are flat iron. The curve looks strange....almost like a rear bumper applied to the front? Very nice looking car though. Lot of these seem to be coming out of Canada...eh? Ray

I take that back. The curve is normal. Not sure why they look larger. But they are chrome. I Loooove that color. L-96M...marathon blue. Hopefully by this time next year mine will look that good.
That is a 74 through.....loook at the strut caps. Those are late. It is probably august or just after....1973. Ray

That car, except for the chrome bumpers, is a duplicate of mine,...well, except that mine doesn't run, has missing side chrome, has peeling paint, rust spots, crappy dash,....but other than that,...an exact duplicate.

I bet I've got better axle/CV boots.

I've got to share this. DB offered to help me out. So he drove the hour+ to get down there, we grab the tranny, tote it to the car, climb under and install. Next came hooking up the axle.
DB had mention in a previous tread, the ONE thing he hates working on is CV joints/boots. And what did I have him doing, just that. I about laughed my ass off. thanks again DB. Let me know when you get ready to replace your CV or boots and I'll make arrangements to come up and assist.

Wait, aren't those the '74 aluminum bumpers? Maybe we're just used to seeing them oxidized to crap instead of having a little sheen to them like they probably should have?

Mine are severly oxidized. I tried polishing a spot on it with chrome polish, no effect, except that water beads up on the spot. Anyone know how to bring an aluminum bumper 'back to life' ? How about Oxi-clean. The guy that hacks that stuff claims it'll clean anything. Maybe some Lim-away, or CRX cleaner.
Maybe I'll experiment and post the results.

A polishing compound of somekind should bring it back to life.

I used chrome polish and some liquid car polish. You think maybe something a little courser, like rubbing compound? could try it out on the bottom of the bumper, never be seen.

A friend used Rubbing compound on his aluminum trim around his van, he wound up using a dremel with a buffing attachment.

Do NOT use acid based cleaners. They will eat aluminum. The bumpers have to be stripped and polished, just like rims. They were originally clear anodized I believe. Ray

Can you chrome aluminum? Oh and those Aluminum bumpers are HEAVY AS HELL compared to the ones on a 73 and back.

Heavy...yes. They were designed to survive the 5 mph crash test with no damage. You think those are heavy, you should see the huge piece of steel inside my bumper that came on some of the tourist spec vehicles driven in germany. Ray
