I play 6 string ok, but I don't do any open mic's or and appearances, just like to play some rock, and acoustic rock, more now then before.
working on Pink Floyd "wish you were here", and some old Neil Young stuff.
I get the tablation off of the internet and the lyrics and try to figure it out.
play along to the cd.
I can play lead, (improv on solos' and stuff) but mostly the chords.
I really need to sit down and get the whole songs memorized not just clips, ya know.
one day I'd like to get into a "retro-70's rock band" , not playing the crap you usually here at the local bars and clubs, but real "kick azz", rock, like Led Zep, etc.

I played piano, harmonica, banjo, and guitar about 20 years ago, then I was severely bitten by the dirtbike/streetbike bug( I was in the industry for close to 20 years). I bought an Ibanez S370 electric about a year ago, but I haven't been able to play as well as I used too, but it's only practice,,, too much trabajo. I can sing Old school AC/DC, ya know, blusey-style from the school of Bon Scott? Some of the best songs ever among many great artists of the era. Okay, sorry to hijack, moving on,,,,,
One way to get your courage up is to play some songs for folks you feel comfortable around or hang out with all the time,,, family, good friends. try it with your back turned to them if it's more comfortable. Yeah,, they'll rag on you some, but so what,,, you're doing it for fun anyway and the more you do it, the better you'll be, in your room, or on stage.

Back when I was learning I had a VERY good player give me a tip.
Get a copy of Willie Nelson Live (the double record -- recorded in Lake Tahoe) and learn it note-for-note.
On a whim I did it... took a while to learn it. He was right... my playing skyrocketed and within a year I went on a 4-year international tour... played 1500 shows in that time (yes some times 2 per day)... endorsed Peavey... sold t-shirts... got off the road and went back to college.
After 15 years, I'm finally getting ready to try playing again
Have fun... check out 70s Willie Nelson to train your ear.
