Engine rebuild shops...
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good shop to rebuild my 1.7l 411 motor? I know it will need rebuilt heads, new pistons, and cylinders, along with the normal replacements....The onyl shop i know of locally is Mofoco, buti'd like to see what else is out there. thanks again!

look at the friendly vendors Sticky. Lots of suggested vendors. Aircool.net provides good info, have only heard good things about them, but have not used them myself.
As for the actual rebuild, do it yourself. No better way to learn your vehicle. This forum will back you up when you hit an obstacle.

No problem!
You can do it yourself! Get the jugs and pistons new if you can but if the bucks are close you can clean and hone,re-ring and measure and have your heads checked and rebuilt. How much to do heads there vs the others and get a feel and the bottom end maybe. You could do some of that if it measures out! I guess it always seems to be a balance of budget, but it seems to do it right once is usually better if you can? It pays off on those long trips........lol!bill

You'll find there is a lot of information on the Type 4 engine here at STF.
As for the heads, check with Adrian at Audirac VWs here in southern California, or check with Len from Hoffman Automotive Machining http://www.haminc.biz/ from Athens, Georgia. Both do excellent work
for a fair price. I wouldn't trust my Type 4 heads to any other machine
shop.

Is that Len who can work on anything from a Norton to a tank???
Another guy who does great work and want's to master the skills and create some new ones like the "Rays" and "Jakes" and Ect.........
You have to love it when you hear guys like Jake talk about flow rates and the cone pattern stuff in the other forums! When you look at a head that is ported/polished right it just looks like it will be sweet! I love the head picture with the side by side of the 1.7 and 2.0 cut on a band saw and by hand! Bill
