What Axles can I use?

Post by yllwveedub »

I realize that this question probably has been answered before, but I haven't found anything specific enough using the search fucntion. I'm runnig a 091 (6 rib) bus tranny in my super beetle. I picked up a set of thing axle stubs, but I have had trouble finding drive axles locally. What other options are there? I have heard mention of 944 axles, but from what year and model 944? I know there are several 944s in a junkyard close to my house (at least one turbo and several n/a, not usre on the years). Thanks for any advise.

If you use Thing stubs then I think you have to use Thing Axles. Some of the vendors here can help with the axles.

If you have access to Porche parts then by all means go that route but get the axles, stubs and the cups for the tranny.

Check the thread Help with axle length on bus tranny by silent on the off-road forum right now. He just went through it and has a good understanding on the thread.
Thing axles/stubs or 924/944/axles and stubs take your pick. The Porsche stuff is junk yard cheap. The Thing stuff is collector high.
If you have an 091 in there now you already have the T-2 drive flanges on top so I assume that you have T-2 CVs there without the clip to hold them on the shaft or the shaft is ground to tolerate the greater width. Good to eliminate this condition Cheers. Bob Ingman
