Homemade Fenders

Post by Bob Ingman »

Looking at the pics of the hand made fenders on the rock crawler that Kindred posted leads me to think that if anyone gears up to fabricate this item for the 181 they will get a lot of orders. Who`s got a tubing bender. I`ll take the first set. Just make them in three and six inch widths. Cheers. Bob Ingman

Bob,

Where is the post? I fab all kinds of stuff. Right now I am fabbing up an Acapulco top for my Thing and some pipe doors like the jeeps use.

I'd be interested in buying fabbed items if they didn't cost a zillion bucks... If fabbing, I'd suggest doing to tube bend and then paper diagragms that a local sheet metal shop could complete --- could save a ton on shipping.

I vaguely remember a cool site that had toyota style front bumpers etc for a thing... these would also be cool.

Capn` look on page three of the Type 4 Baja Thing Project thread to see the pics of the fenders. Basicly a tube frame with sheet attached. Very simple. Verf effective. Bob

That doesn't look too hard...

As far as the shipping many people try to charge a low price and then make profit on the shipping. I only charge what ever UPS charges. I shipped an adjustable beam to Virgina for only $38. Those things are big and heavy.

Let me play around with it and see what I come up with.

Capn` those are killer fenders for a Thing. I personally would love to have a set and I`m sure I`m not alone. See what you can come up with and be the first kid on your block to have them.
Personally I would lean toward aluminum sheet though anything from stainless steel to diamond plate would work.Cheers. Bob

Bob,

You own one of those oil wells in Alaska? Stainless steel would cost a small forturne. I'll keep you posted.

Granite guy, welcome to the 181 forum.
Cool fenders. I have never seen bug fenders on a Thing before. Are the fronts rears? They appear to be. I have seen fronts in the rear but never rears in the front. live and learn as they say. Thanks for joining us. Bob

Thanks. I was hesitant to post pics because the diehards would be offended by radically changing the Thing. As I did this I made sure everything was reversible. The fenderwells have not been changed. The front fenders are fiberglass rear baja fenders. This would be my art car, I have painted it 3 times over 4 years

There seem to be more modified things here than stock ones.
A few around here are using T-4 engines as well so we are not a purist crowd. Glad to have you with us. Bob

Granite Guy:
Don't worry about purists getting offended. Everyone should feel free to post whatever idea they are thinking about or want help with. With the Thing forum especially we are into making all kinds of mods. There are some who prefer stock but there are offroaders, those who like them dropped and chopped, and even those who want their thing to be a drag racer. Its so annoying when someone goes on the forum, especially the conversion forum and say you shouldn't do that to a bug, only a vw aircooled engine belongs in a bug. Thats what a forum is for, we throw out an idea and someone may learn from it and modify your idea and make something even better. Welcome to the Forum.
