Using POR15

Can I use POR15 on my pan, FROM UNDER THE CAR? How clean does it need to be? The POR15 people indicate use their degreaser, etcher etc. I would like to just wire brush, rinse with water, dry and brush the stuff on. Add a bit of spray paint and be done. This is not a frame off rebuild, just looking to slow surface rust under the car. Suggestion?

Bill I am not 100 % on this but have heard that POR-15 has a good tech assistance on their site.
All that you said seems right but others are more familiar with it than I so hang on and we`ll get some good imput here on this. Cheers. Bob

Bob: Good to hear from you. And thanks again for all your help over 2 years! Have been driving and enjoying my Thing nearly everyday over the past month. Going well. For your thoughts: my hesitation seems more pronounced when the engine is warm...ie...the choke should be off. Does that tell us anything? It is no where near the issue it was (since I set the advance to ~30 degrees), but it does remain.

Bill to check your choke remove the air cleaner then turn key on and watch as it opens. In about three minutes the butterfly should be vericle (fully opened). If coming open too soon or too late loosten the three screws on the side of the element and rotate the ceramic piece the wire attaches to. Seems like clockwise is to add tension and counter is to lessen but it could be the other way. You`ll know when you turn it. Good to have you back here again. Bob

Radioman, I've used Por-15 on two different allpications with good results. First thing I would suggest to do is wash the underside with good ol liquid dish soap like Dawn which cuts the grease, the apply the Por Marine Clean to the surfuce to be painted. this properly cleans/etches the surface the Por-15 is to be applied to. It is VERY important not to let the Marine Clean dry on the surface. It must be kept wet until you are ready to rinse the Marine Clean off with fresh water. If you allow the Marine Clean to dry on the surface it will leave a powdery surface that the Por-15 will not adhere to .After successfully applying the Por-15 to the surface, I would recommend topcoating the Por-15 with either Chassis Coat or something like Rustoleum. Por-15 is a wonderful product that really bites in holds. Make sure you wear disposable gloves when doing this and make sure you have Por-Solvent on hand to aid in your clean up. Once it dries, that is it. So clean clean whatever it gets on that you don't want it on immediately. Good luck, applies easy and lasts.

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll get some refrigerator carboard for the shop floor and just a bit at a time.

My 73 off-road Thing has complete POR-15 application to both sides fo the pan, insdie fender walls and more. I used a wire brush, used the degreaser when it ws greasy or oily but when it was not greasy or oily I just used the metal etch and brushed the semi gloss POR-15 on using a two " brush. I wore rubber gloves a hat, safety glasses and just brushed on and that was it. That stuff is awesome. Even wearing all the protection I could I still got POR-15 all over me adn it is a bear to remove. The areas I coated are sealed forever. My front end, rear diagonal arms spring plates the hole 9 yards. I love this stuff. The POR-15 tech support is fantastic. I have the gas tank restorationon both Thing gas tanks inside and out. It is great. I am a real POR-15 fan. It is perfect if you do not want to sand blast, and coat wit bed liner like Herculiner. K-mann
