videos.. how to?
I'm wondering how one can take video footage from a camera and get it online. I see a lot of great race videos out there and I want to be able to share some of mine from time to time? Any help.. Thanks!

Videos online
Getting video onto your computer shouldnt be too hard as long as you have the right components. Most camcorders have a mode to export the video (firewire and usb) to a computer. Just hook that up with the appropriate cable and port on your computer and capture the video with software like Adobe Premiere. Make sure you have A LOT of space on your hard drive as it will be about a megabyte worth of data per minute that you capture. Of course you can only capture what you want instead of getting the entire amount of recording from the tape/device you used to record your race. From there you can edit what you want to put online. This is what I understand as I have done a little bit of video editing with my equipment. Hope this helps.

Scott-
If your camera is too old to have USB or Firewire, you'll need a video capture card. There's a whole range of them, from some cheapies ( < $15 used) to some really nice ones ($ > 200).
The nice ones do the video encoding in "realtime" on the card, and can provide instant results on slower computers. The cheaper ones rely on software encoders, and can take a little while to chew through the video after it has been captured.
There's some in the $40-50 range that get good reviews and come with some pretty decent software.
You very much of a computer guy? (IE: would you feel comfortable taking it apart and swapping cards?) Also, PC or Mac?

Great! Thanks guys, I do appreciate the info. I've got some video to share and think folks here would enjoy it. My camera doesn't have USB or firewire.
I'm comfortable tearing into the computer and swapping cards. I'm guessing if I buy a card it will have some nice software to be able to put video into the most popular formats. I'll have to check around.
Hmm. For some reason I thought I could do all this with software alone. As you point out WD-40 I do have to have some sort of interface/ peripheral to hook the camera up to the computer. My camera has go old' RCA jacks. Darn it. Okay. I'll have to take a trip to the local electronics store
. Thanks again.

A friend of mine bought the Leadtek "WinFast TV2000 XP Deluxe" a little while back, and he's happy with it. It has a lot of features for the price. It's a multi-purpose card, with TV inputs, video inputs, and even an FM tuner. Leadtek makes several other cards if you don't need all the bells and whistles (such as a remote control, and the FM radio tuner).
It looks like you might need to buy a composite -> svideo adapter... All the tuner cards I'm finding all have a svideo input only. I believe Radio Shack carries those, or an adapter might come with the card.
Newegg.com has the best deals on them, and fast shipping. You can tell that it's a popular card, as they have over 500 reviews on the page. If you go to their main page, and type "tv2000" into the search blank, it will bring up the leadtek tuner cards. You'd have to check around to see what kind of software they come with, but I'm pretty sure they come with software with some basic capturing functions. (the only issue would be if the "deluxe" has software that the more basic cards don't.
There's all kinds of other options, and you can go to Best Buy (or equivalent) and pick up some USB devices that will do the same job, but tuner cards with the BT86x and BT87x chipsets are what I've used, and I'm happy with them.

instead of getting a server to host the vids, you could just put them up on Winmx or Kazaa or a p2p server like that. Anyone you want to allow the file will be able to get it when you are on the server. problem is, you must be using those programs at the time someone wants to get the vid. Also, you must tell them the name of the file before they can get it. it's a pain in the butt either way. you could also get AIM of MsnMessenger, or YIM or a chat program and do the same thing, but again you have to be using the program. you also have to send the file to the person requesting the file, on dialup that could be hours or days online. not pretty, but free to use.
just throwing out some ideas for the crowd.

Wow. Thank you for all the great info guys. I really do appreciate the time. I'm going out this week hopefully to look at some cards and software. The winfast is on my list. I'll have to go to Best Buy and see what the have to offer. So, as soon as I get this all ironed out I can post a video or two.
I'm going to the local races here next weekend so I'll have the camera with me. Fun stuff!
