bug pac "mondo" exhaust

I have a BP extractor with the "mondo"exhaust....delivered today. Damn the muffler is heavy!!! will have to engineer a good hanger, but anyone know what "mondo" means? Didn't want glasspack...just something with a bit of "authority". Have I screwed up? Anyone know what that decription means? It will be about amonth before I get it on. Bill

It's been a LONG time... if memory serves correctly it's Latinin/Spanish/Italian slang for ENORMOUS/HUGE

Well, I put the BugPac extractor on...its OK but not the quality I would have expected. The kid at MAMOTORWORKS from whom I ordered was nice but didn't know what he was talking about and missled me badly. The MONDO muffler is very heavy....sounds nice...not as loud as a glasspack...a nice deep sound...but louder than a QP (contrary to the kid a MAM). But it sure sticks way out beyond the bumper (contrary to the kid at MAM). And the BugPac extractor will not fit a Thing with the skid plate (contrary to MAM) without cutting the rear up-turned section a bit with a grinder to fit..... not that it was a issue, just something I didn't expect. At least I can get to my valves easier now that I removed the Thing Shop dual header. One day tho I might put it back on. It was neat....the MONDO ain't. Neither is MAMOTORWORKS.

The sound kinda reminds me of a city transit bus when it was new, but it'll change its tune over time. I've had one on my 74 std T1 for a few years now, and its deeper/mellower now. I think my next header/muffler combo will be an A1 system.

Kelwa1,

What is an a1 system? Looking at muffler options now coming out of my Kymco Thing Header...and have been at a standstill. Ideally I'd like something that comes through the bumper, but if not, I'd at least like something that tucks WAY underneath.

Anyone have any ideas?

Me too, Mike. I havn't been able to find anything called an A1 system. Any photos? I can't decide if this "mondo" muffler (aka Dynamax/ Flowmaster) is too unrestrictive for my stock 1600 DP.Can't seem to get the engine tuned now. What's that all about????? :P

Sorry guys, when I refered to the a1 system, I meant a complete exhaust. Merged header, w/A1 2.5" dynomax muffler. Typically made for a T1.

I havent had any tuning problems with the mondo at all on my T1. 1600dp, german 009, pict 34/3 carb, and stock tuning specs. It was a bolt on part for me.

What tuning problems are you having?

Aircooled.net carries A-1 mufflers for lots of different headers.They dont specifically sell the Mondo style however.The A-1 is a better setup but I do love the sound of my Mondo-just wish it wasnt so blasted huge...

Kelwa1: Since the extractor/mondo set up, I have a slight and irregular "miss"...not a "skip"..just miss. Can't feel it under power, but can hear it at idle and between slow shifts. However started all over: new NKG plugs, Bosch wires, new points and new Pierburg 34 carb. While doing the points, I discovered my advance can leaks...no plate movement, no advance. Have new can coming. Then will retune everything...esp new carb. Expect to try a 130 or 135 main jet. Thoughts, anyone? BTW, power seems stronger above 1800 rpms with new exhaust and revs come on faster.

Low end will drop off a bit with a less restrictive exhaust and the Mondo is very unrestrictive.The new Vac setup may clear up a lag on acceleration between shifts.

I was going to suggest a dizzy problem. Is it the stock unit, and how many miles do you have on the ticker?

Try the new vac unit and see what happens. If your car has high-milage and the new vac doesnt help, its possible the bushings are worn to the point of dizzy replacement ( or rebuild it if you can find somebody to do it ). Does it miss just at idle or as you drive it also?

Update on mondo thing: Tuning problem turns out had nothing to do with the new exhaust. Vac can failed on advance side and it took me a while to track it down, since I had no thought it would fail after just a year. Replaced the can with new one and retuned everything. Runs REALLY nice now. thanks for ya'lls interest. :D
