My 412 coupe to the paint shop tomorrow

I am really pumped. I POR 15'ed the floor of it after removing the carpet, and it came out really well. Put in a rear window using the window rubbers from revolks, and it was OK, but the bonding they used to keep the rubber together at the seam looks shaky. Time will tell i suppose. I hated to put that window in, put i have to tow the car a 100 miles to the painter, and did not want to damage my headliner at all.

I have contacted Wolfsburg West about makeing a carpet kit....no reply yet. I want the car as stock as possible.

for me for the carpet , i go to the home depot harware (or same store) and if you look in the carpet section he have same vw original look carpet, rubber on one side, boucle on one side , he have at heach side 1 each with no carpet only rubber and that fit no,1,, onder the alluminium door protector, that make factory finition , excet he have smal inconvéniant it is only 4 foots large , i cut the carpet for tu put the line at the midle of the car ( front to the back ) i cut halfe moon for trans.shifter on each section that geeve you section appx. 8 foot long by 3 large appx.and for to joint the too section i put large tape on the black rubber, very easier for to clean and very good wather proof but expensive cost me 100.$

No kidding, that is awesome! We must see pictures when it is done! Revolks has rear window seals for the sedan/coupe? Plus I thought that Revolks did carpet?

The 412 is now in the hands of my paint guru..........i just picked up my 74 beetle today and can tell you that this man is going to get my business. It is perfect.

Paint, yeah, my 412 (the Nomad) will need that sometime, too...man, that is one job I've never really been into, prep and painting of an entire vehicle. Small pieces, like engine tin, yeah, but not the whole thing. Anyone that can get it right is a REAL artist in my book.

I might attempt a solid color paint, but spraying metallics sounds a little more complicated... I want to try it myself anyway. I'm taking a welding class starting Thursday, then maybe I'll take a bodywork class. Basically I've read to do it right you need prep, prep, and more prep, then you might be halfway done...

The carpet is easy to get. Sew fine sells the exact German make in numerous colors, by the yard. I keep telling you guys this...lets get a group buy together with sewfine. I can send in a pair of seats...and they will then have patterns on file. The pattern making and seat set maing is $450 for teh front But once they have the pattern....the fronts will then be $125 each...for anyone else who orders after that. I will pay the initial $450...if enough people order to help me offset cost. Also, the rear seat is the same pattern as a 1969 type 3, 2 door. Right down to the armrest pattern.

Yeah, I'm in man. I just gotta sell of some extra junk lying around, get rid of a few extra cars, etc...

My Golf is just about dead, I'm probably going to part it out. A few odds and ends I've put into it are actually worth $$$, but it's just not worth fixing a car any further I bought for $300 two years ago! Anyway, what do you need, just a list of people committed to buying?

Vanagon master. Check.
Audi slave. Check.
Rear vent panel. Check.
Carpet kit. Check. (Revolks is not quite the same)
Front and rear seats. Check.

I may not post very often, but I'm here reading and learning. Just waiting for Ray to quit his day job and create his own WolfsburgWest or write a John Muir reader.

You are probably right about wolfsburg. But they have not replied, so i will call there today. I would like to at least attemp to get some of the OE insulation stuff that goes behind the back seat. I know they get it in a roll and cut it to their patterns. If i could get it in bulk, then i could cut it myself. I will then contact sewfine, or if anyone has gotten quality from sewfine let me know. I have never seen any of there work in person, but as you can tell i want the best i can get for the money.

I had my seats reupolstered locally with a tweed/vinyl. they came out real nice, but cost me $500.........if i knew how to post a pic, i would!

You mean that "mousefur" gey felt (which they have)...or that loose grayish insulation..bout 1/2" thick...like is used under the headliner. Thats not too hard to get either. OK.....lets put a list together. I know how money and timing is...so lets shoot for around mid march.
What I really want to do...is get pricing nailed down. I'm sure the more we could buy...the cheaper. But....since they don't have a pattern, the first one in...pays the $450 price...for he front seats (normally $250). But if we all get in at the same time...I am sure the could spread the cost out to say 10 of us...for $20 ea...for pattern charge. Also, a while back I did some measuring. The 69/70 type 3 rear seat is so nearly identical in every way....that they can use that pattern. Rear seat set with armrest for sedan....is like $125-150. Now.....about the wagon rear seat. I have not checked.

Bear this in mind too. I am planning on cloth/tweed seats for mine ...with vinyl panels on teh bottom seat area/skirt...with vinyl sides on the head rest. take a look at their site and their fabrics.....nice! Lets all figure out what we want and need....and also someone should compare a type 3 and type 4 rear wagon seat and see the possibilities.

If there are no type 3 wagon rear seat cross match....i would be fine with burying an extra $20 in mine....and everyone elses....just so's the wagon guys won't have to pay $200 for a rear seat pattern...even though I don't need that pattern....right now

As for carpet.....and the felting for the rear deck and trunk. They sell it by the yard. They have one or two colors of the felt....and several carpet colors. If we can all decide on one or two colors of carpet...i say we get a bulk buy...meet somewhere and cut it up.

Patterns for carpet. And binding. They tell me at Sewfine, that you are better off...cutting and titting the carpet yourself...then sending it back to them for edge binding for a minor fee.

i myself...Have a few ideas on the edges and heel pads. I happen to have peeled a complete heel pad off of the carpet on a 412. It is just heat sealed on. I can mold it of urethene...easy. Just shave the carpet pile down in the area it needs to be...and use 25 year urethane construction sealant (home depot). It will look factory and never come off. I can also cast an edge onto mine in about the same way. Again...it will look factory though not the same as VW...and never come off. Ray

Count me in for the seats. I'll go for a tweed top (checkered as in westfalias) and vinyle sides. I may also want extra tweed fabric to do the panels. I can easily do the type 3 back seat comparison, since I have a 70 squareback. will let you know the next few days.

As far as colors and fabrics, short of one fabric being more expensive than another, there is no real cost difference from set to set. They can all be as different as the day is long....and still be no problem as they build each kit indiviually. So everyone gets what they want and need. But...all i really want to accomplish on the group buy is (a) getting everyone an interior as soon as possible so we can start showing off our cars

(b) getting he pattern on the books and making no one have to pay upwards of $400 for patterns (c) possibly a bit more of a discount for all of us...just by etting a lot of business to these people at one time .Ray
