Anyone got FAG and or SKF part numbers for 411 front wheel bearings?
I did scroll back a ways looking to see if wheel bearings had a thread of their own, but didn't encouinter them at all.
I would appreciate it...................

I'm on the way to work...but I will post them this evening. They are also the same as Porsche 914/ Early and late used the same bearings. Ray

Well, I don't know part #'s, but when I was looking on busdepot.com, they listed many front ACVW bearings Type I, III, IV, KG as all the same as the '70's-'90's watercooled VW rear, both inner and outer. I haven't interchanged them personally, so I'm not offering a 100% guarantee.

This list on the bus depot corroborates what you say:

http://www.busdepot.com/busdepot/detail ... 311405625B

However looking at the front disk brake setup I would have guessed that the inners and outers are the same as for the 914 which are not the same as a type 1s. I'm not sure as I have never replaced them. However, the rears are definitely not the same as the 914.

Thanks,

Kevin

In VW numbers, the outer is 311 405 645, inner is 311 405 625B (or D or other letter, just not 625plain which has a smaller ID).

The industry-standard number for the outer is LM11749/LM11710 (Timken "Set 1")
The inner is L45449/L45410 (Timken "Set 8")

Hmmm, interesting, I'm confused. Yeah, just stick with the known part #'s or get the corresponding 914 parts I guess. Now, consider that the bearings might be the same across many cars, but may look like they are different because the spacing where the bearings fit on the stub axle might be different... :? Is that possible?

Here are the numbers for a 914/4:

Surprise! They're 311 405 645 and 311 405 625D, just like every ACVW (except II) from March of `68 (or the rear on Rabbits, etc.)

Ah right, I've read late bus people are able to fit Porsche 944 hubs with bearing spacers to their T2 stub axles in the front for Porsche brake conversions, while other ACVW's are not compatible this way.

God, you got to love the way Germans do things............
Yes, the rear wheel bearings for some of the Golf/Rabbits are similar.

I called the local FAG (good Deutsche bearing folks) - no FAG stock of what I need but a cheap Japanese kit 108 for ZAR 155.00 , say about USD 26.00 both sides.
Local VW agents have the kits for USD 43.00 both sides.
The local budget car parts outlet have a no-name-brand bearing kit listed under VW 411/412 for about USD 14.00 both sides, plenty of stock. I wonder if they have ball-joints?
SKF, my favourite Deutsche bearing und seal people, have kit 108, 3 in stock, for less than USD 30.00 for both sides.

The kit 108 has bearings, inner and outer, and the seal, and the sachet of der korrekt grease sufficient for both inner and outer bearing.

For future reference, make a note in your workshop manuals:

Seal is 40mm by 52mm by 7 or 8mm, double lipped.

I am off to SKF to get a pair of kits, let's do both sides now.....................
Tahnks for the numbers, guys!

Hmm, I checked my freezer and looked at my bearings. It looks like you are right. It was just that the front bearings for my type 1s and my 914 were just in different packaging. When inspecting them side to side they are the same.

Thanks,

Kevin

Yea, I got a pair (including the seal) from a FLAPS in Vermont when a set of front bearings went on my 914. In the middle of nowhere, no less! Luckily I always carry a lot of tools and a jack stand. Too bad the old bearings when they went welded themselves to my front spindle. Now that was a pain to get off the old one and sand down while on the road. Luckily a guy with a welding business and pneumatic grinding tools drove into the parking lot. I've always been lucky that way. :P

Thanks,

Kevin

Yes, they're used on many cars besides VWs.
There are three front seals with the right OD/ID for Mar`68-up; the 111 405 641B works on drum brake only (it has a flange with too much "dome" to clear the spindle on diskbrake apps); the 311 405 641B is for disk and will work on drums, same goes for the "Rabbit" 321 501 641 which is probably more likely to be in-stock at your F.L.A.P.S....NAPA uses NOS15805 or Beck-Arnley BA 0523158.
This is a good example of why you've got to check the parts closely when you get them from a non-VW place though - if you plug in 311 405 641B at napaonline.com it comes up with the same Beck-Arnley number and two completely different NAPA numbers - I'll bet one of those is actually for `66-early`68 and about 1mm too-small on the I.D.
