Well I finally did it

Post by DeathBus »

Since Uber is buying up every 2 door he can find . I broke down and finally bought the one that I have been eyeballing for awhile. It WAS light blue, looks as if it has been outside for awhile, paint is faded, Interior is fair, cracked dash (Imagine that). Looks as if the engine is toast, from looking underneath the car the sump is slobbered in dryed oil. The clutch pedal goeas all the way to the floor, dont know if the clutch cable is snapped or maybe the cylinder is bad???? Anyway I will find out REAL SOON!

No cables on the clutch. It has a master and slave cylinder. It is probably both bad...AND the flexible jint line at the rear...which is a vanagon part #. Ray

I guess thats why its call a HYDRAULIC clutch!

Actually...if you would like to buy a hydraulic clutch cable....I make them   8) ...hee hee. Had to do it!
The cylinders are actually easy to rebuild...the parts are a different story.
On the master...teh guts are so close to the vanagon master...that you can even get a piece of 1.5" angle iron...drill four holes in it...and bolt the thing right up under the dash. Or..simply pull the seals off the pistons (don't use the vanagon pistons in teh 412 cylinder..they won't work...compensation port spacing is different)...and just use the seals and spring,

The slave is a different story. Finding a proper material seal...with the right size and configuration is hard to do. I can find a SAE size seal easily...that is a bit tight and require a packing ring underneath...for about $3...and it works great. But...its hard to find it in the right material. My last one evaporated in about 6 months. I am working on having one particular company make several machined cups, seals and bushings for me soon. I'll let you know how it goes. The right materials exist in seasl...problem is most of teh yahoos at hydraulci shops have no idea what materials most of their seals are. They go "Uh...yeah sure...its EPR...or whatever you said".... .
Also the piston needs several mods. Simple. With a round file...make 5 grooves in the rear skirt. It was made teh same diameter...so fluid rarely fills in behind the cups...making for low pressure...and fast wearing seals. Also the psiton needsto be put in a lathe..and have a band about .010 cut in the area outboard of the seal. Wherin a simple strip of etched teflon (about $2 can be JB welded in....as a packing to keep teh long piston from cocking in the bore.Lastly...if you have rust pits...the cylinder needs to be plated. Checking on that. If you nickle palte it...it will be smooth...and last forever. Also...the outer boot isnon-existant. But i will be casting that before too long. Ray

So, you bought it! Cool! 8) :D I hope I didn't influence your decision too much, I usually only do about half the stuff I plan on doing... Damn, we need to get back on that club plan, and "storm some shows en masse" in the future (I forgot who said that before?). You got me pumped again!

Hey DB, I'll get that engine lid sent out this week! Dude, check ebay, there are the most 411/412 clutch related parts I've ever seen on there right now! You may have some competition, though... :P

Whoever this sherrie507 seller is on ebay , they have been selling off a ton of 411/412 parts in the last while, a real treasure trove stash they had...

That was me. The audi cylinder is an easy mod, but an adaptor plate must be made...and adjusting it is a hair different. It will require more pedal effort as well..because the cylinder bore is smaller. Ray

uh oh I sense a bidding war! :D

Yeah I had some cash burning through my pocket and couldnt resist. The body is in DAMN GOOD shape, no rust at all! Plus by letting it sit for a year I saved $150!!! When I saw it last year I asked how much for it, they said $800 (for a non running 412!) I was able to get them down to 550. Well I went back this year and asked the same thing. They said 800 again, car hasnt moved or been worked on. I told them that I knew about this car, it has been sitting awhile and that I am probably the only person in the whole Metro area that would buy the car. I said I had $300 cash right now in my pocket I would give for the car. The sales lady (it was at a car lot) said she would have to go ask the owner. She came out and said he would take $400, I waited and told her it was a deal, $400.

I am going to go get it tomorrow or Thursday I will post pics when I bring it home. ( my neighbors should be real happy  )

Well I got it home today, all the brakes were locked. Surprise

The latest date I can find on the car is the service sticker on the door from a Phillips 66 Station in 1987 when the car had 87k on it, the odometer says 93k now.

It has the EB engine code, Cali model, which explains the little to no rust.

Tranny is COVERED in oil, looks like gear oil and not hydraulics, maybe a seal failure or just the fact that it has set for almost 15 years and the gear oil just leaked out.

With a new battery some electricals work, like the damn door buzzer and one parking light, but that is pretty easy to sort.

Engine turns over smooth as silk.

NO fuel pump, this might be the reason why it was parked.

car is MARATHON BLUE. 2 door 4 speed.
