DUH! Headlights????

Post by DeathBus »

Went to my local FLAPS, bought a headlamp they said fits a 412, thought to myself that it looked to big, took their word for it, yep you guessed it, it is the one for a Beetle and Bus!!!   :?

Anybody know what size headlamp these are, neither the Clymer or Haynes gives any clue (surprising huh?)

Those are the very standard, sealed beam single filament headlights. Available at Kmart, Walmart, .........etc. You just ned to know whether its a Lo Beam or a Hi Beam you need to replace.

It is a standard 5.5 or 5.75". If you are feeling like splurging a little....get the Hella H-4's (any H-4 for that matter...but Hellas are especially nice).
Technically you can use H-4's in both low and high beam positions. Just that you will need to erradicate one pin of the 3 on the bulb. Simple matter with the dremel.....or ...you can swap plug bodies . These are $45-55 ea...but very well worth it. They have lead crystal lenses, have twice the lighting output available because of the reflector and lense design, have upgraded output bulbs available, and have an ingenious prism at the top of the lense.....that cuts the light off in a horizontal line. That way...when you adjust them, you can adjust them up about 3-4 more degrees....so the prism cuts off the blinding light at about trunk or dashboard height, and you end up with about an extra 100 meters of lighting.
I can't rave about these enough. I use Hella H-4's on the outer dual filament beams. They orginally come with 55 low/65 high ...wattage which already puts sealed beams to shame. For about $15, you can buy the 65/75, or 75/100 watt lamps. If you go 75/100...you have enough power available, but you will need to run a pair of fatter wires and an extra relay. About 2 hours worth. I will drop in part #'s after lunch. Ray

I've got the 7" 2-headlamp round H4's on my MGB, the difference is astounding, as Ray points out. If you have a car with that 200mm 2-headlamp square system that uses sealed beams (70's-80's), Hella also makes a retrofit kit for those. I had them on my '82 Plymouth Turismo starting in 1984 (got them on a trip to Germany). I wouldn't drive behind anything else.

Here's a link to a place that has Hellas (not trying to increase their sales, but Google returned their URL when I searched, and they've got photos of the lamps...)

Here's the page with 5 3/4" 4-headlamp-system lights:
