How do I install a later synchro swingaxle in a '51 split?

Post by benron »

I pulled a splitcase trans and 36hp engine out of my'51 split, because I want to upgrade my drivetrain; however I realized afterwards the nosecone configuration is completely different than an ovals. Iknow there are purists out there who would want to take me out and horse whip me. Well, I just have never been a big fan of the 36hp/crashbox scene. In the past, I have done a couple of oval upgrades with the nosecone and hockeystick from a bus. What would be the the way to hook up the front mount/nosecone on a split? Any help/expertise/suggestions in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Benj

I'm pretty sure you just get the nosecone and hockey stick from a bus swingaxle tranny. Or if you're not concerned with everything being correct you could just have a later model mount welded to the torsion.

You know that works on an oval because the bracket that recieves the mount allows it in turn to accept the nosecone for a bus. This is completely different. There is a deep round hole in the pan where a split's nosecone and front mount go into.

You'll need to weld in a later bracket that accepts a mount,or get a Berg type intermediate mount and not worry about the nose mount.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you suppose I'll have to modify the length of the shift rod as well? Maybe I'll give the guys at Berg a call. Thanks,
