Have been asked by a member of my local club for a T-4 flywheel. I'm not sure if it is for 411-412, or even if there is a difference.
Any of you good folks looking to loosen your load from the parts stash?

Ive got several, they need to be resurfaced. They are all bus flywheels. If its for a type 4 conversion it should be ok.

The guy is coming over to the house this eve to look at the spare 412. What do you want for it and I'll let you know what he says.

Yes..they are all the same. A 210 or 215 flywheel from a type 4 powered bus is the same part # as 411/412. Ray

Hi everybody, I'm new to this forum. My name's Lee and I have a '74 412 that I've been looking for a flywheel for. I've been told that the flywheel for the '73 and '74 model 411 and 412's was different from the other flywheels, because of the different transmissions in the type 4's. I've been looking for a flywheel for my 2 liter aircooled vanagon motor I'm putting in my 74 412. I'd love to get one of those original 411 or 412 flywheels and get it resurfaced if possible.
Peace, Lee

I don't know about the vanagon...but the 411/412 210 and 215mm flywheels ...are identical to the 210 and 215 flywheels in the bus. The parts that are different on the 411/412 are the disc..which has a different spline size and the original pressure plate.,...which has a little more clamping force...but was otherwise identical. The bus pressure plate bolts up just fine. I would simply take an extra .010-.015" out of the ledge to get more clamping force on teh fuel injected models.
Why are you using a vanagon engine? Most had less HP than the fuel injected 1.7 that came in the 411/412.
The only flywheel unique to the 411 ( but not the 412).....was the 200mm 1968/69 flywheel. It never was imported here and is no benefit anyway.
You should collect a couple of discs...as they are the part that is hard to find. Even worn out ones can be rebuilt several times.
If you have just aquired this car....I suggest you tear down, cclean and inpect the 4 speed tranny....or you may very well have problems.
Oh!...and welcome!

The Vanagon engine or the 412 engine support bar will have to be modified, the mounting bolt holes for the engine motor mounts are different. IE, not a direct fit.

I wish I had the original motor from my 412, but I don't. I do have the clutch plate though

When I bought it "back" from the guy I had sold it to the motor was gone.
I found a "CV" 70 hp motor, 1970cc on e-bay and thought that would be a nice motor for my 412. The motor was at 42K miles "old" when front end damage totaled the vanagon. I sent the heads to a machine shop and got them totally redone. There still sitting here in plastic bags ready to go back on. I never split the case, but I did hone the cylinders, and clean and re-ring the pistons. I've also put a new flywheel seal on. I still have to check out the tranny before I put the engine in.
What was the original horse power of the 74 412 1700 motor?

Hmmm...according to tuna's site, '74 EA 1.7L had 68bhp? Not sure how bhp really compares to hp in modern terms...Why was '74 down in power from '73's 80 bhp EA? I think in Europe they switched to dual carbs on some later cars, so is it for sure the info is the same for the U.S?

Heck, anyway, wasn't the 2 door 412 4spd. the 2nd fastest production aircooled VW ever produced? I believe the SP-2 was the fastest with a factory published a top speed of 100mph, while the 412 top speed was 96mph.

Seriously you need to look into this, or get a pre 1980 2 litre engine case.

What am I gonna have to do to the crossbar?
I have the one from the 412, and the one from the vanagon.
which one would be the more reliable modification.
