Pertronix-wise? Thought I'd double check...

That's definitely a Pertonix Ignitor, yep, and the price is good...better than what I can get the MG version for elsewhere. The only difference from version to version is the mounting method and the trigger core attachment method, the electronics are the same.

I'm surprised he doesn't list the MG version, it's really popular...I know of 2-3 folks that have converted their Lucas 25D4 dizzys and been real happy.

If there is a VDUB shop around you I would buy it there, I usually get mine for around $59

Good idea, there's a place about 1-1.5 hours away and I may be down that way soon.

When you ask for it make sure you specify for vacuum advance.

All these dummies that run 009's have cause the pertronix maket to be flooded with units for the 009, So there are 2 types.

That looks like the right one but they also offer one with a longer wire so if you have a coil mounted off the motor. Classicgarage list them also for 75. Have to add shipping in? If you go to the petronix site they show the longer wire one also.
I think Ray said you need to modify the pickup to get it to go on the shaft. bill p.s. I put one in my Mom's 69 cont beetle and set it and it helped so much!

yes, but it will not improve performance, dont waste your cash, buy a Bosch.

Actually...I did see...a slightly hotter spark and smoother running. It is a 40,000 volt coil as compared to the factory 18,000 or so. But...it appeared to kind of fall off...after about 3-4 months. I don't think it did well with the Texas heat. It was most noticable in the summer (the fall off).
As long as the resistance is right...you can use most any coil with the pertronix. It is just a switch. I am thinking about hooking it to a nology coil pack and CDI wire system. I have installed a couple sets of those for people...and they do indeed work very very noticably well. I still have reservations on potential longevity though. Ray

Is that the kinda system they use on a Cavalier with the two coils so you get one coil for two cylinders? That really worked for a friends when one went out he still got to work and back home! What about one of those red MDS coils you see? Do you need more volts out and does it draw more on the rest of the system? I always like the Bosch coil and actually havent ever had one fail! bill

Its a pretty cool system. I took some heat on some posts a few years back by those who thought it was hype. Its actually nearly identical to a system Ford used a few years back. It is capacitive discharge...in that there are massive individual capacitors...inline....on each plug wire. The wires themselves I believe are double wound to amplify. They are about 12mm in diameter. Each one has its own braided grounding loom. They have a central coil....that is an amplifier much like that found on the Jacobs system. Yes, they have a bit of hype due to the amount of publishing and testimonials....but the engineering is sound.

the claim to fame....and I have seen this in person.....is that it puts out sparks in the 300KV range. Thats 300,000 volts ( ). They prfere that you use the non-resistor Beru silverstone, silver electrode plug. It does make a difference with this application. It produces and blue purple sprk about the size of a dime.....no sh*t! The part that twists most naysayers heads...is tha they say that much voltage would cause the plug to melt. The reason why it does not...is sound. A system like the MSD..delivers its full range of 40-50 KV spark in say...50 nanoseconds. I'm going off memory here...so I don't know the exact amount.....but its rather long...in spark terms. This system dumps all of its spark in ....in like 10 nanoseconds. Not only is it huge and hot....and causes excellent ignition in high rpm, high compression engines.....but at that speed, it does not hang out long enough to overheat pieces. The silverstones do make teh big huge spark. The Bosch W-7 DTC tripple coppers make one about 1/2-1/3 that size...but still huge by any standards. But with three electrodes...the variation and forking ...and infusion with mixture...is excellent. I wonder what the iridiums may do?

Anyway...those I have found using it...including several racing outfits...swear by it. What many do say...is that after a while, the capacitors may get weak. Wether this is due to overheating....or caused by poor location of the grounding braid on the engine...they don't know. Its popular among road racers. But they say...that even if they have to replace the wires at the end of every seadon..which they sometimes do.....its worth it.
It can be triggered just fine with a pertronix or Mallory...or even points. Ray
