VIN Number and year

Hey guys, I bought my wife a thing that we had shipped over from the UK. It is a German model with the bus style taillight. It also has reduction gears on the rear axels. My question is, can you determine the year of a Thing by the VIN Number? The reason i ask this question is because we were told it was a 1972 model, but the title says "date of first registration in the UK 10 18 1972 (DEC/D MANUF 1970)". What does this mean? The VIN Numbers are 1802458656. Can anyone tell what year car this is? I still have to title it here in the US and wanted to make sure it is titled with the correct year.

Thanks
Marvin

The VIN third digit, in your case "0", indicates the year of production.
In this case 1970.
