So more parts questions

Post by Bowman74 »

So I have some parts questions for all you gurus out there. I need two parts to re-attach my metal trim to the car.

The first are the large plastic clips to attach the wide metal molding strip along the bottom of the car. It looks like (hard to read, as its very small) it is part number 515 853 567.

The second are the metal retaining pieces for the wheel well chrome that attach it to the body. They are part number 411 853 724.

Does anyone know where I can get these parts or something that will work just as well?

Thanks,

Kevin

Albert,
Thanks for telling me where to ge the large plastic clips. As far as fabricating new ones for the fenders, that's a good idea and it shouldn't be too hard to do!

Unfortunately those are the smaller clips for the trim that runs along the middle of the body. I'm looking for the larger clips that connect the trim along the bottom of the car.

Here in this image, I need the clips to attach the molding circled in red, not the molding in yellow.

I know this does not help....but....some things to thik about. Those clips and the trim...are major rust contributors. I like having them for originality sake...but for mine, I am welding the holes and re-applying the rock guard texture paint down there. But I will have the fender lip chromes...only baked enameld black along with the mirrors, door handles, finger plates, rain gutter edges and headlight bezels.
Also...it may be worth it if the pins on your clips are OK...to JB weld them into the strips.

Anothe option....not really that hard, is to fill the back of the strips with urethane casting material, body file it even...and apply them with a strip of .030" 486 adhesive. That will NEVER come off...until you apply ashesive remover. Also this way, leaves, water and gunk cannot get underneath. Ray

Good ideas Ray. My squareback has rust holes where every one of those clips went on the bottom. By the way, that trim looks very similar to the early type 3 trim. Maybe the clips are the same.

yes , bowman , ray and ecdez are just , but with différent oppignion , yes for the large clip she are the same for type 3 , and you can buy that on vw , my oppignion for the rust in the hole , if you buy in same time the clip o ring that is very fin rubber washer and it is very important to install the clip very tight if you put rubber glue all around the hole that make good job , and if you spray rust proof product inside the rocker panel your car is good for long time , and for the clip inside the fenders chrome , you do good cleaning inside the chrome , and if pins or bolt are broken or very rust , you slide the support (stanles steel plate ) to the end of molding if is hard take flat screw driver for to clean the rail and remoove smal kink , and you can remoove the support , you can make new with very fin stanles steell grade no. 18 ,, 20 or 22 ,,,22 is more fin you can cut that with steel scissors and you sold new pin with acid soft solder for plombery 50/50 wash with wather ,you can doo the same thing with the rear gravel gard ,,,,good job. albert
