Silent signals

Post by Longbeach412 »

The signaling relay on this car is so quiet, I never hear it! on top of that the return spring is not working. So I end up driving for miles while signaling (possible cup bait!). Is it just my relay? can you put a louder one in there?

Part of the queitness is due to the location of the relay rack under the fuse panel and ehind carpet....but a lot is due to the type of relay. Some of the earlier metal bodies relays wee nice and"clicky". So were some of the black plastic ones. The newer clear generic flasher relays that you buy at FLAPS now....are way quiet. See what you have in yours. Ray

I believe it is the same relay used in all the aircooled VW's. (12 volters)

The one in my 79 is deathly quiet, while the one in my 4 door 412 is loud as hell.

Oh Yea! thats all I've ben doing. I drive it every chance I get, to get the bugs out and get to know it some more. Now it runs good except it starts a tad hard, still has a bit of a bang from the AT at take off and shifting, and I think it needs a muffler. Also the seats are pretty bad and I need to find out how to take them out to restuff and repad. Ya know it aint too bad running when you start nitpicking on the signal relay and seats :)

Check your tranny fluid levels, with it running and IN DRIVE. If it is low it will cause the "bang", If your timing is too far advanced it can cause starting problems.

Also, its worth it to check the main line pressure andadjust it at the modulator. As the tranny ages...the pressure drops. It makes for that "bang" in shifting.
The hard starting is either a fuel mixture issue....an FI trigger point issue (D-jet only).....and most likely...and ignition issue. A great mod.,...is to dump oints...and put in a pertronix. Ray

More trouble than fixing the switch if you ask me but perhaps interesting to the electronics-geek type:

I'm glad you have been getting some zoom time in!! I never got to that point! Just think when you get the other quirks out, ohh yeah!
My t3 auto did that bang shift too and after adjusting the bands it worked pretty well even with the ac goin! I can see how that pressure issue could be a big part of the shifting issues! Marc, are you talking about the column switch rebuild being the issue to fix and not the relay? So you dont have to worry about the blinker being left on or hearing it? bill

Thanks for the nice chart Marc. I believe that is the flasher schematic...but I didn't look too close. The self cancelling part of the turn signal that breaks...is either the two horns that hold the return springs on each side....wherin you "can" steal that part from another column assembly...but usually if that part has become brittle and broken..evrything else is about the same condition. At that point I just buy a new assmbly. The flasher/turn signal stalk is sold seperate from teh wiper arm. They are simple to swap out. They are also sold as complete two arm paired assemblies. Thats the best way to replace them
If just the little "tooth: or cam is broken....I replace that with one scavenged from another. Ray

We used to just wire a Mallory Sonalert across the turn signal feed line from the flasher for those unable to hear the flasher. Sonalerts come with various tones and SPLs up to the threshold of pain (good for that auntie with really bad hearing, EH!).

Here's a link to Mallory's catalog, in case you're interested.
